Calling all UK Amigans - Hardware oppertunities
« on: March 27, 2008, 02:01:13 PM »
Hi all,
With a bit of luck I'll be placing an advert in Rapid Electronics' newsletter for anyone with any unused Amiga equipment in the UK to get in touch.
I’m still figuring out quite how to handle any offers (Either I'll list them here manually on A.org or I'll try and sort something else out), but, one thing is for sure, I'll probably need to know which Amigans live in, and where you might be located in the UK.

Regards,
Hodgkinson.

If you track down any 2000 expansions I'd probably be quite interested.

You could throw up your finds on Amibay, that could be a way to avoid the stuff falling into the hands of traders.

That sounds like the best idea to me as well.
Hopefully less unscrupulous people than on Ebay as well.

I was thinking AmiBay too. The only snag is it isn't like the old one, where anyone could post - You've got to have an account set-up first - Which will deter most people from listing.

I might try signing up and listing any replies manually.

Absolutely

http://www.amibay.org

They have a forum entry for "freebies" and "Swaps".

Unfortunately I think the kind of person who chucks out Amiga hardware isnt likely to be the kind of person who finds Amiga.org or Amibay.org

Freecycle is your best bet.

Why not list a few items here for those who aren't looking at amibay.
I mean, I'm not looking to purchase anything, but if you list something I might buy it on impulse.

I have an A600 (working) and 2x A500s (status unknown) if you are interested

I just can't be bothered joining Amibay, why not let it be more like Amibench? There was hardly any abuse and it was a lot easier

Apologies Hodgkinson, but I have to respond to this:

The old AmiBench was dated & Mark Wilson wasn`t willing to surrender the name. Mark was & afaik, still is, looking at doing something different with the old AmiBench.

AmiBay is still an Alpha site atm. As the site develops it will evolve. It has evolved so far through users input & feedback on the Forum itself. Unless you sign up for an AmiBay account with a Valid Email Address (no web-cr4p-type mail boxes allowed) you won`t be able to post your ideas & feelings about the site. The more people that do, the quicker the evolvement! The Staff (Inc myself) are a friendly easy going bunch of Amigans & are there to help in any way possible. Just read the rules (easy peasey) & there shouldn`t be any abuse in any vernacular!  :-)

Best Wishes,

Charlie

@ Hodgkinson

I also feel that I have to answer your comments. You must appreciate that Amibench was set up back in the glorious olden days when Ebay wasn't the place it is now.

Mark's site was fine, but latterly was also wide open to abuse from traders who could profiteer from cheap offers then make a killing on Ebay.

Amibay has been set out from the start to contain any trader abuse of the site. The Recycle Bin, (where freebies etc. are offered) is off limits to traders and the admins do carry out checks and police the site, which is more than could be said for either Ebay or Amibench.

It's your choice if you want to use the site or not, however, if you want a comparatively safe place to trade Amiga items then we feel that we are the place to be the preferred choice.

Signing up provides a measure of reassurance that members are bona fide and also allows trader checking to be carried out to prevent abuse, if you don't like that, don't sign up.

We've only been open since December last and we have over 220 members worldwide already, with no trades going belly-up so far, it's all been 100% positive.

Even accelerators have been going for reasonable prices on Amibay recently, check the posts to see what I mean.

What do you have to lose?

Its the requirement to have a none web based email that will stop me using your site. I now only use gmail addresses for my  email as when i was using more tradition email i was receiving in excess of 2000 spam per day which required time, energy and  spam filtering software on my my part to sort out. Since moving all my email to gmail i now get 1 maybe 2 spam per day and these are sorted into its spam folder for my review, more importantly i have only ever had one false positive with gmails spam filter and this was many years ago.

So its web based email all the way for me i'm afraid.

@ gazgod

That problem isn't impossible to solve, just contact an Admin at Amibay and I am sure we can sort it out for you, you wouldn't be the first member with a web based e-mail only.
