how is it released if no amiga store sells this nor a digital iso of cdrom?

Should it not been announced until all amiga store's and/or hyperion updated its own store?

Physical copies will come first, to delay piracy a bit i guess.
Over here we have already friday evening so the announcement came a bit ill-timed.

I have 4 licences of 3.1.4, which I don't all use, thank you very much.
And I do want to support the developers, but as they stated before, they work for free.
So I still thinks it's a valid question.

The CD (74MB) contains all versions for each supported model, plus extras.

There might be smaller floppy bundles with only the essential disks included, depending on the dealer.

Nice cardboard box with 3.2 roms and CD and install guide would be nice. Cant see how they would fit roms in a dvd case.

A nice box would be awesome, like the OS3.5 one.
As there were about 60  people involved i wonder if a new book will come out in the process. Might be a good bundle: CD, ROM, book in a shiny box. :)

The NDK has also been updated and is present on the disc, download available later for sure.

The changelog is in there too.

I just tried to figure how one would choose a minimal floppy installation:
Do i need disk 1 and disk 10?
Why is an EN or UK localization required? What is the 'internal' language?

For now i am at 9 disks:
2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 14 plus one modules disk (28 - 35)..

A question for the OS3.2 volunteer developers, who presumably also have access  to the OS4 Repository:

FORMAT LONGNAMES (OS3.2)

In the OS4.x and Enhancer Software Format V54.1 and V46.11 (http://wiki.amiga.org/index.php?title=Format) system command this is:

FORMAT LONGNAME (OS4 & Enhancer Software)

LIST GROUP (OS3.2)

In the OS4.x and Enhancer Software List V54.7 and V46.7 (http://wiki.amiga.org/index.php?title=List) system command this is:

LIST GROUPS (OS4 & Enhancer Software)

Is it better to keep things the same as much as possible across OS4 and OS3 ?

The internal language of AmigaOS has always been US English. So unless that has changed with 3.2 (hopefully not, as that would create several messes around the place ;-)), it should still be.

I guess it would be difficult to see how compatibility would be with software that was made for 1.3, 2.0, and 3.1.
I have ADPro 2 and am wanting to buy other Pro. type software.

Apparently a lot of 'switches' have been added to configure everything and avoid dealing with patches and hacks instead.

for one language you need at least 14 Disks. The localization disks are for the included HELP-System by just pressing HELP you get infos and Help for the options in any language. This needs a seperate disk

And as far as i understand the modules disk is only needed with an older ROM, isn't it?

I think we can do both, support our hobby and ask about an upgrade.   8)

I just bought 3.1.4. ROMS for my A1200 and A4000, plus I still need to buy for an A2500 and A3000 that are on 3.1 still.

There's a place in France called "Amedia" that lists an upgrade from 3.1.4. in a dropdown, but I'm not sure how it works.     Maybe Matthew from AmigaKit can set something up.

Noob Question.

I Workbench.Library on disk?

I have 3.X on my A600 and I think it could make upgrading easier.
Is there a minimum of how much a Kick Start needs for booting? I believe so.

Also, if I wanted to go all-out and put everything in Ram for speed and upgrade ability, could it be done?
Title: Re: Amiga OS 3.2 released
Post by: Pat the Cat on May 17, 2021, 12:56:38 AM
Theoretically. With the Load Module program, you can upgrade or downgrade any component to a "loaded from disk into RAM" capability.

Means slow booting times though. Even if you can get all the relevant modules in Load Module friendly format.
Title: Re: Amiga OS 3.2 released
Post by: trekiej on May 17, 2021, 01:33:34 AM
I believe the opposite end of the spectrum is every thing in Rom or Kick Start.
If you have the Ram space either could be useful.
Title: Re: Amiga OS 3.2 released
Post by: Steady on May 17, 2021, 01:52:12 AM
@TribbleSmasher

U.S. English is still the default language.

For that language and assuming you don't need a SuperKickstart, you would need the following floppies:

Install
Workbench
Extras
Classes
Fonts
Storage
GlowIcons (only if you are going to install GlowIcons)
DiskDoctor (not required but it is good to have this bootable disk on hand. It is much better than the original DiskDoctor)
Locale
MMULibs (if you have 68030 or higher and you don't already have the manufacturer's version of 680x0.library).
Backdrops

You will also need the modules disk for your machine ONLY IF YOU ARE NOT USING A 3.2 ROM.
Title: Re: Amiga OS 3.2 released
Post by: TribbleSmasher on May 17, 2021, 08:46:49 AM
So, 7 disks then?
Title: Re: Amiga OS 3.2 released
Post by: Steady on May 18, 2021, 01:28:32 AM
8. I included Backdrops because I couldn't remember if it was asked for regardless. In the FAQ it is also not listed as optional, so for that reason I recommend making an ADF of that too.

Update: I just checked. The install will ask for Backdrops so you'll need to write that out to floppy too if you want to install using real floppies.

Could one possibly skip the installation of the Backdrops disk?

Eve if not, we are still far away from the previously mentioned 14 Disks for a floppy install. Dunno where that came from...

Of course if you would order a disk set you want to have all disks for a system, including the modules.

I don't know if that helps, but installing 3.2 from a Gotek floppy drive took 15 minutes on a bare A3000. Every Amiga household should have an external Gotek nowadays. ;)

Does anyone have experience with https://www.retro-updates.com in The Netherlands?

I ordered the CD, two ROMs and 7 floppies last weekend, but got no confirmation email and they aren't replying to support messages from their "Contact us" page. Payment was taken from my card immediately.

I'm going to write the 74MB iso to a small (re-)install partition on the CF card and install from there.

Looks like that’s what was agreed upon in January, but clearly not what has been communicated from the devs and their entourage.

On the other hand, after seeing quite a few videos on 3.2, I don’t see the appeal… I will just copy over a few bug fixed commands and new shell v47 (which hopefully fixes some annoying bugs) and let the rest be - too much pointless nonsense and cluttery.

And here I could start a long rant, but I will save that for later - one thing I will mention though - they have killed the Amiga tick - one can no longer tick off items in menus, as ticks are now replaced with dots (or boingballs?)

Not sure, what you are talking about. If you're refering to the 'checkmarks' in menus they are still there, maybe you have seen some theme-tweaking gone wrong or another distribution like AmiKit?

I don't know anything that's not in the news item, but that's not how I read this: "granting right to release" (i.e. commercial release) vs. "no objections" (free release).

Plus, Ben Hermans would have never agreed to something that would have taken all commercial value out of any further 3.x releases. It's not like he cares about the product...

The GUI does look quite a lot better, 1992's Gadtools just doesn't cut it anymore IMHO - although I'm wondering how useful that is if you're using it on 1992 computers for retro purposes. But I'm not the target audience anyway.

@kolla:

Menu checkmarks have nothing to do with the Amiga tick; any resemblance between them is coincidental. Checkmarks are used for togglable menu items, and dots (not boing balls :-D ) are used for mutually exclusive items, which is pretty standard on most OSes.

Menu checkmarks have nothing to do with the Amiga tick; any resemblance between them is coincidental.

That is simply not true, the paradigm here is a workbench, with drawers, tools, projects etc. and the notes hanging there with checkmarked items - that’s where the checkmark comes from in the first place.

Quote

Well, ironically, macOS holds the tortch and keeps using checkmark ticks everywhere without anyone complaining or getting confused. I don’t know what your list of OSes is, but I suspect it is rather limited. Again mimicking Windows.

On that topic, how is max size of windows now? Still limited by screensize, because… Windows?

I may just as well go on…

Workbench…
Wtf has been done to Windows menu? It looks crowded, but nothing is added or removed… just moved around, screwing around with muscle memory of users?
When is “open volume” needed as menu entry? The icon is right there on the workbench… (the only usecase I can think of is if volume is marked as “hidden” in workbench prefs, but then… I am almost betting on it not being available in the menu either.)
As someone who has been dynamically altering menus since workbench got an arexx port… dynamic menu entries are annoyingly slow… how is that list of volumes holding up with changes?

Does any of the possibly relevant menu entries relocate icons on Workbench to their original positions yet?

In IControl (Intuition prefs, really) it is still not possible to set a windows equivalent to the screen dragging hotkey… sad.

(time to go to bed)

The Open Volume menu item is handy when you want to open a volume but the screen is crowded with windows that you will need to move to get to the icons. It removes that pain. OS4 has it too and I personally find it handy to have.

Beyond Execute Command and About, there is not much muscle memory to worry about with the Workbench menu.

I second that. It is also handy when - as I do on my X1000 - you have 21 volumes visible on WB (out of my 93 total). Finding the right one in the submenu is often easier than hitting the right icon on the WB.

They are two different things: one is the menu equivalent of a checkbox, and the other is the menu equivalent of a radio button. So it makes sense to distinguish them, this is done not just by Windows but by OS4. There are plenty of bad interface designs in MacOS and no reason to blindly make the same mistakes. This is for Amigas not Macs.

No, most people don't read manuals. Most developers had to learn this the hard way. :D

Things have progressed since 1985 - GUIs are supposed to be self-explaining, albeit this presents an ongoing and sometimes impossible challenge, given the technical restrictions. Radio buttons are a well established paradigm for mutual-exclusive choices in AmigaOS since 1990, so it makes sense to extend it to menus as well. The rest has been said.

C'mon, you must have detected more serious flaws. Even we did.

You do know that Commodore's idea (93) to use checkmarks and bullets in the menu like that predates Windows 95 - so this is actually an original Amiga concept.
Who said anything about Windows 95? Anyways OS 3.1 was released post 1993 without "radio buttons" in the menus.

(and personally I never saw the point of radio buttons, we have cycle menus (and cycle to menu) for that)

I suppose that is why it is working just fine in OS4?

Seriously - when I first complained about this, Thomas said it was due to the possibility to somehow "move" windows into a position where no gadgets would be available to move it back or resize - there was ZERO explaination to how this could possibly happen, but arguing against dogma is pointless. When pointing out that OS4 manages just fine and resize windows larger than screen without any trouble, the "clarification" was that OS4 has the option to resize windows from all directions - well, now OS3 has the same, and yet here we are. And now there is a new excuse "break every program out there" - excuse me, but wtf what? Why don't those programs break on OS4 then?

And now there is a new excuse "break every program out there" - excuse me, but wtf what? Why don't those programs break on OS4 then?

Well 3.1 was a rushed job in the dying days of Commodore. So they didn't have time to do much of anything. But read the devcon notes from 93 and you will see the idea clearly described. I mentioned win95 as that is the first windows version that has this, so commodore clearly was first.

As for windows larger than screen I too didn't understand that reason about moving into a position where gadget would be unreachable, and resizable from all edges doesn't make a difference as i see it. But the reason that programs might break is certainly true for console, which allocates a buffer based on the screen assuming this is the largest buffer it hast to be prepared for. This can obviously be changed , but if console assumes this, then other programs may expect it too. Programs written for os4 are probably expected to be prepared for this - i don't know - i just know console will fail.

Now we have introduced some legacy compatibility options in 3.2 and limiting window size to screen could certainly be made a new compatibility option so in general windows could be made larger. Then we would "only" have to change intuition to handle this. The point is however that it is not a small thing, and none of us see any real value in it. I understand you do, but I have never seen any user using this on windows, so why would they on the amiga. It would just be a waste of time implementing and testing it. I would much rather spend our time on something that brings more value to users.
Title: Re: Amiga OS 3.2 released
Post by: kolla on June 06, 2021, 05:30:24 PM
The use case is quite obvious - you mention console, sometimes output (and for that matter, input) is longer than console window is wide - especially when workbench screen is 640 pixels wide, and that in particular is when I - ad hoc - wish to make the console window larger than screen. In general I don’t see the point in moving windows off screen if it’s not possible to make windows larger than screen.

So when do one wish for wider consoles?
When dealing with long filenames and file comments for example.

As for radio buttons - so Windows 95 was first version of Windows with what… “radio buttons” in the menus? And Win 3.x and earlier used what… checkmarks?

So make the screen wider with Autoscroll enabled?

If only the window of the console is wider and offscreen, you couldn't read the text anyhow. What's the point in it?

How about fixing a _vertical_ scroll bar first, probably much more sought after.

Anyways, this (both vertical and horitzontal bars) already exists in ViNCEd, and you can even have it on first CLI if you use the Con-handler shin^hm (sic), just don't use the shim with 68000 (guru 8000 0003 if Workbench is loaded), at least not with 3.1.4 (no idea about 3.2, I don't have it, unsure if I will - depends on the license it ships with). But - scrolling text in console is a heck lot slower than flipping an oversized window back and forth. Then it's really better to find some font that is readable at sise 6 and use SetFont to set it ad-hoc.

Btw, going from "I can only take it that you want to break every program out there" to "I don't know - i just know console will fail" is quite a ... step.

I said dreaming about horizontal. A vertical scroller is already being experimented with

And your are quoting me wrong. I said "every program out there that assumes this can't happen". My position has never been as dramatic as you suggest, but I don't believe making windows larger than screens is something worth wasting time on for the next many years if at all.

At last fixed in 3.100 or 42.100 or whatever he prefers… though it still prevents SetPatch from patching copyright notice, boot with 3.1.4 kickstart and 3.1.4.1 setpatch and Hyperion pwns 2019, load the ViNCEd Con-handler “shin”(sic) and Hyperion only pwnz 2018 again. Bug reported a very long time ago, but only triggered a rather irrelevant kneejerk rant from “Der Richter” and no fix. Perhaps whoever managed to convince him about the 68000 bug (kudos btw) could also pass this one on, it looks bad that Hyperion only pwnz 2018 when they should pwn 2019, just because of Con-handler. And who knows what else SetPatch may fail to patch due to this, I have not explored, and my asbesto suit is getting thin when it comes to reporting bugs.

Some of us have grown VERY used to having icon.library coming from PeterK's IconLib 46.4 - with 3.1.4(.1) it works great still, but with 3.2 there are problems, the main one being due to version strings apparently. 3.2 uses 47 as major version for its icon.library, opposed to 3.1.4 which uses 45. To work around various trouble with AROS/AfA (from what I recall), the true color "TC020" variant of IconLib 46.4 is major version 51. The end result though, is that whatever in OS 3.2 that is loading icon.library (workbench.library v47 I presume) fails to load PeterK's icon.library if it is a 46.4.xxx variant, but still manages to load those that are 51.4.xxx, I suppose from the assumption that 46 <47 < 51 - so if your system is 020+ you can use for example the TC020 library, but if you're on 68000, you cannot use IconLib 46.4 anymore (unless you patch it to become for example 47.4.xxx instead of 46.4.xxx). Sad sad sad.

But why would anyone on a 68000 use IconLib 46.4 in the first place? Well, first and foremost - SPEED - on slow systems you can really tell the difference - maybe magic has been applied to icon.library v47 to make it super fast as well, but I doubt it. And secondly - all the "helper" programs - some for "cosmetics" others for work-arounds in both software and hardware. I have grown used to having outlines and shadows on my workbench icons, does at least 3.2 offer this?

I find it a bit strange that there seems to be NOTHING in the OS 3.2 FAQ about IconLib 46.4, as it this is a version of icon.library that has been more or less dominating for many years now, and included in the oh so perfectly legal 3.9 boingbags 3+4 of certain official OS 3.2 wingmen.

For sake of entertainment, I attach a screenshot showing shadowed icon text, the most awesome Amiga icon style, and also showing how Hyperion only pwnz 2018 when Con-handler is loaded (yes, version 106.2 - CLEARLY this little piece of software has been under development since the 70s to reach such a high major version!)

(oh, and there is bug or ...eh... feature challenges with "Prompt" - as you may tell from the screenshot, I use a multi-line prompt (which probably just works by pure coincident, and not by design), and the "bug" is that variable expansion in prompts only work on the first line. In the 3.2 FAQ, the word "prompt" is only mentioned once, and not at all in relation to the shell or C:Prompt, so whether this is known bug/feature or not, I cannot tell)

it works great still, but with 3.2 there are problems,

We also do like Peter's library, that's why we kept him in the loop regarding upcoming changes long before release.

It was Peter's decision to keep his lib at V46 for tradition's sake. If you'd like to have a V47 or 68000 V51 variant, you'll have to ask him. The OS must request a V47+ icon.library due to API enhancements.

If those APi changes is (the what… 4th? incarnation of) DefIcons, I don’t really care much about it (roll my own) and will just alter 46.4, I got the source. But others may vert well stumble on this awkwardness and so it should go into the FAQ.

Ignorant question, is this only available as physical roms to install, or also digital for those that want to use for emulated Amigas?

The CD contains all the ROM files for the Amiga range.

Got my copy of 3.2 last week and have been playing with it in FS-UAE before deploying to one of my real systems. Enjoying it overall--there are some good QOL improvements. The inclusion of datatypes for modern image formats is important. I appreciate the return of comprehensive documentation and the integration into the system is very nicely done. The default DefIcons config and prefs tool is much easier to understand than the one shipped with 3.5/3.9--I feel much more comfortable editing this one without worrying that I'll break something. Thanks to the dev team--I hope we'll see more updates.

That being said, a few issues/notes: ;)
1. Gadget corruption in Pointer and Palette prefs. The FAQ says this is due to a CGX incompatibility, but I'm running on NTSC (with P96/Picasso96API.library 2.363 installed). See attached images.
2. Oops - GUI layout problems in RAWBInfo when NOWORDWRAP is enabled. See screenshot.
3. The advertised TOBACK_QUALIFIER feature of ClickToFront does not actually appear to be implemented. It's not included in the icon tooltypes nor mentioned in the help docs. Am I missing something?
4. I don't care for the thin, blinking cursor in texteditor.gadget. Would prefer to match the GadTools/CON: look as much as possible. Is this configurable through ENV variables?
5. Likewise, I'd also like to configure chooser.gadget to resemble a plain GadTools cycle gadget.
6. The Appearance Settings window in IControl prefs should probably have a Use or OK button instead of a close gadget.
7. Most windows now open directly under the mouse pointer. Is this configurable? I'd prefer to have them either centered on screen or in the upper left (below the titlebar) as in 3.1.
8. The Workbench prefs window is now too tall for a non-laced screen and autoscrolls. I realize screen real estate is an issue given all the window content, but could it be shortened by using 2 columns for the Icons group instead of 1?
9. Similarly, Palette prefs now uses an autoscrolling screen instead of a Show Sample button/window. This makes it harder to see changes in real-time. Could the choice of autoscrolling or button be made in a tooltype? And the Sample window resizable/scrollable so as to not block the controls?
10. Also in Palette, the presets Magic and Thin Menuborders appear to be identical: changing Menu Bright Edges between white and black seems to have no effect. Changing between other colors does have an effect.
11. Perhaps the new Auto-arrange Icons option should not snapshot everything after it executes? All the other icon arrangement options are temporary unless the user chooses to snapshot so it feels like this one should operate similarly. Or retitle it so it's clear from the outset that it will be performing a snapshot, e.g., "Arrange and Snapshot Icons".

Thanks again! Looking forward to exploring this new release further.

I'm glad you deficons. I tried my best to create some good categories and a prefs editor that would not scare everyone away. The hope is however to replace deficons with a new simpler system sometime in the future.

3) feature should work. Documentation is lacking - we will fix
4) afraid not as block cursor is reserved for insert mode (though that is not yet implemented)
6) agree
7) I'm not a fan either is all I can say

The rest is noted

Thanks for taking note of my comments. I'll have to play with ClickToFront some more (this could be an emulator keyboard handling issue on my end). I hope something can be done about the texteditor.gadget cursor--the inconsistency of text/string UI elements across the system is... unfortunate. Likewise about windows opening under the pointer. Those are my top two concerns for the moment (pretty good considering the overall complexity of the system, I think!).

The future of DefIcons sounds promising--hope to hear more about it soon. Keep up the good work. :)

Have to ask, is any one else having issues with dragging stuff off screen.
It works fine in 3.1.4, but Im unable to get it working with 3.2.

Also, surely you could have done a check to allow PeterK's library to work. May sound stupid, but its put me off setting up OS3.2.

Activate it by selecting the "Can move Off-screen" checkbox in the IControl preferences.

just don't use the shim with 68000 (guru 8000 0003 if Workbench is loaded)
This problem also fixed now, in 3.101 or 42.101 - http://aminet.net/package/util/shell/ViNCEd

Quote
Changes made for 3.101:

ViNCEd now delays loading the icon and workbench libraries, and
only opens them when they are already in memory. This avoids
conflicts during early startup if only one of the libraries is replaced
by LoadModule. While this is potentially a user error, it may be
helpful to be conservative. ViNCEd now re-attempts to open the
libraries as soon as the preferences become available, i.e. whenever
   ENV: is created and filled.

Yes - "potentially a user error" is to use the OS version actually released, and not "between releases" OS installed on hard drive of the developer - shame on me :)

Anyways, kudos again for acting as der Richter-Filter!

No, it doesn't make much sense, noone ever struggled to distinguish these for more than 30 years - hopefully people can still READ!

No, most people don't read manuals. Most developers had to learn this the hard way. :D
What I meant was reading THE MENUS - hopefully no documentation should be needed to do that, heh.

C'mon, you must have detected more serious flaws. Even we did.

I don't have 3.2, I comment from what I see people fumble around with on youtube videos. But I understand that shell is almost just as broken as it was with 3.1.4 again in regards to FailAt levels and whatnot... even ThoR isn't using OS 3.2 release shell? So the question is now - how will Amiga Shell be maintaned from here, and how will updates be published? I __VERY MUCH__ preferred it when Thomas lumped updates to Aminet.

It’s a fresh install on a stock (emulated) 4000 with plain, 4-color icons. The only explanations for the gadget corruption are a 3.2 system bug or an FS-UAE emulation bug.

Could be, but over here opening pointer prefs gives a corrupt display on uaertg 1920*1080*32. Replacing the stock icon.library with the one from aminet solves this problem.

Now that i am testing the new OS myself, at a first glance i find it very weird that the previous 3.1.4.1 installation doesn't even fully boot with just the new ROM installed. It even complains for not finding iconlib and workbenchlib. :o
And, it keeps asking for the workbenchlib like a hundred times, i wonder how that was implemented...user clicks Cancel just ask again and again, right?
How can one put logic into this?
If there is no (good)workbenchlib, system's keep booting into a limbo state (empty screen) and a user banging his head onto the desk (remember: we hit CANCEL multiple times as we are SURE there is such a lib on the harddrive)... >:(
The OS could instead nest the calls for the lib and break the booting at the best possible time and leave the user with a CONsole and an error message and a possibility to recover from this? Like, the OS3.2 ROM doesn't like the 3.1.4 ROM or the 3.1.4.1 workbenchlib and would offer a hint (a few bytes of text)?

i never experienced this behaviour before, you could always boot with just the new ROM installed. :P

More complains:
The installation with CDROM(image) is not as smooth as possible:
-boot from Install32 disk
- Click ActivateCDRom
it should open the CD after mounting it. In my case i get an error because it is already mounted! How is this an error?
Then, from the CD, which i opened by myself, i have to open the install drawer, to find toomany icons.
I click 'Starthere', but nothing happens, instead it tells me to dblclick the install disk (again!)... so i did. guess what happens? Nothing. The installation from CD did not start, i am looking at the same screen but now the CD is mounted.
Not smooth, not at all. 8)
I'd like to see  two more icons in the root of the CD: 'Install to HD' and 'Install new system', maybe even integrated into a simple chooser app. ;)

Once the CD is mounted (and we have some RAM of course) there is no excuse for not having a bigger installer, another RequestChoice, launch RexxMast or whatever. ;D

Why isn't the Locale&Input selector the first thing i see? A pretty one, of course, not the Prefs editor as it is now. Just glue those gadgets (that your already have in source!) )together in one LangSel tool and you are done, how hard can it be?

Locale prefs is not set to the country i chose the language for, instead it is U.S. and it doesn't point me to change it. Prefered language is not set, time zone neither. nothing is localised, i choosed two languages to install and none is prefered.
If i chose more than the internal language (eng u.s.) shouldn't there be an muex choice for my prefered language/country in the next installer page?
The RAM icon is 'wrong', ugly.
'Auto-arrange icons' from the tools menu also snapshots the positions without asking me?? Maybe i want to judge the result before keeping it?
There is still an Expansion drawer, what is this for?

No help support for several tools. You hit HELP key and nothing happens.
If you hit HELP and the app uses its own screen, the help guide is not popping to the front, it stays in the back, e.g. Workbench screen.
No version/build information in GUI tools/utilities even if they already have a menu built in. Could be in the window title tho, i mean cmon.
Workbenchs stack size is still 4kB?
Workbench prefs: 'hidden devices' do not indicate if there is actually a disk in the drives.
Icontrol prefs does funny things when you open up its async windows and clicking checkboxes and then just click Use in the farthest window...
DefaultIcons prefs is ... special.

There was no "Welcome" or "ThankYou" demo after a fresh install from CD. So much wasted space.. : ;D

Yes; this got me.  I assumed that because I'd selected the British English install that my language would be set to British English.  In fact, I'd forgotten that this was even something that needed to be set.

In Locale Prefs there are no preferred languages, and HELP doesn't work because it is looking at the preferred languages list, which is empty (so default English), yet there are no English language help files installed, because I installed British English (I'd normally put both in the preferred languages as usually things don't come with a specific British English catalog).  It should set the preferred language to the one used for the install.  If the user wants to change it later, that's up to them, but the install should be set to the language the user installed.

Hey all, here's a question I haven't seen come up:  is AmigaOS 4.1 FE for classics compatible with the 3.2 Kickstart ROMs?  And by 'compatible' I just mean 'will not break if I install them.'

>Oh great - so checkmarks as ...heh... "radiobuttons" are removed in menus, but kept in cycle-to-menu, with flying colours, litereally, da effin lolz... consistency!

This has now been changed; chooser.gadget will be consistent with the rest of the OS.

>Are "hidden" volumes (wb prefs) possible to open via the "open volume" in Workbench menu?

No.

Using an A4000 3.2 ROM instead of an A4000 3.1 ROM works fine for booting OS4.1FEu2 in WinUAE.

Really, haha, that’s funny - how about removing all “theming” and render Sys:Prefs/ReAction pointless while you’re at it, so all ReAction classes render to something consistent with the OS… rest of the OS.. hehe, I’m sure it would also shrink the code and remove bloat as well.

No.
Right, though so. That’s one aspect of “hide volume” in Workbench prefs that I really don’t like, it goes too far. Typically it is used to remove clutter from the root desktop, but it also makes it impossible to open a Workbench window of the volume or any of its sub-drawers at all.

One more - in 3.2, do any of “Update all”, “Redraw all” or “Reset WB” move left out icons and volume icons back to their stored positions? I *really* think “Update all” should clean up the root window too, and not just volume and drawer windows.

After installing the 3.2 ROMs in my A3000, I have to say that the answer to this appears to be "no, 4.1 FE Classic will not boot with these ROMs".

At least, that's all the evidence I have at this point.  I'll have to get the 40.68's back in there until we have more testimonials.

Disregard.  You would think, after 31 years, that I'd have learned to be careful with the old girl when putting her back together again.

I disagree. It is not just about tidying up the Workbench screen, but also removing Volumes/Devices from being selected where it makes no sense to do so. To just remove it from the Workbench and not the menu would be incomplete.

And before you say it, yes, it should still be available from the CLI because that is a Workbench option, not system-wide.

Workbench will not open a hidden window; this includes eg. requests from ARexx scripts to do so.

@Steady
As an alternative thought, the way it works right now for some users might be useful, because it is a way to move any of the volumes to menu. Think that someone might want to not have any icon on his workbench and open a volume only from the menu. This way this is possible to be done.

I don't believe there is wrong or right way here, because it depends on how someone wants to use the system.

I really don’t see the point of the “open volume” unless it can be used for “hidden” volumes.

So there’s now “win” command? That doesn’t make much sense, the name is flat out confusing, no reference to workbench and could just as well be the counterpart to a “loose” command. For decades we’ve had wbrun, why not use that? A simple rexx script will do.

@Minuous
Oh, and are really SURE that you can open a hidden volume or any of its drawers using this "win" command? I know for SURE that it certainly does NOT work using any CLI command (wbrun) or Workbench AREXX port on OS 3.1.4.1, so it would be fun to really have it confirmed, and also have it confirmed that same can now be done using RX "Address Workbench WINDOW 'Hidden:' OPEN"

What if you have many windows opened that obstruct the volume icons ?
Then it is easier to open that volume via menu, so having an option is better than not.
As for the hidden volumes, that could be an extra option.
The must be a good reason why the volumes are hidden in the first place.

This is Amiga and Workbench, there are no good reason to clutter the screen with tons of windows in the first place, at least I never have this problem - bringing root to top is just a hotkey away. It would make more sense if it was more like macOS and the Workbench menu was _always_ there, even when other programs’ windows were active, but it’s not.

I can’t speak for others, but I never hide volumes, I only hide devices. For example on MIST I have both a fat95 SD0: and cachecdfs CD0: both scsi.device unit 1, and both mounted at boot - I use GhostBuster and its WB prefs and set both DS0: and CD0: to hide if not valid filesystem. Of course this feature is not in OS 3.2 because then users cannot format partitions, says ThoR. However, if I could hide ALL volumes and instead use arexx to open them rather than double clicking volume icons - I would! To be more precise, I would make icons on the desktop that would replace the volume icons, and havr them do much more than just open the drawers. Reminds me, on my wishlist is “triggers” for double clicking on workbench background and window backgrounds, with and without qualifiers, so one can configure double click on background to launch an arexx script, shift + double click to run a command etc. Same for windows, but with path to window being passed on as an argument.

The way Workbench works on 3.1.4.1, a hidden volume can not be opened AT ALL as a wb window, neither can any subdrawer, and left out icons are of course also not there. From previous comment by Minuous, this MAY have changed in OS 3.2, but I know better than to trust that :)

You are right, this behaviour hasn't changed for 3.2. Hidden WB windows are not openable via ARexx or similar methods.

I don't really see a problem with that though: if you wanted to use look at those devices/volumes in WB then you would not tell WB you wanted them hidden in the first place, logically.

And so we end up here...

That program is buggy, you can see for yourself at https://github.com/Arisamiga/Mnemosyne/blob/main/src/window.c that it is not using MENUTOGGLE flag like it should.

Well, duh, of course it is! The question is rather why did the author do what he did here?

At a guess, probably didn't read the relevant chapters of the Libraries RKM and the Style Guide.
