C=64 & 1750 power supply question

Anyone have any experience powering a 512kb REU using their stock C=64 power supply? I've read (everywhere it seems) that this is a bad idea. I'm aware you're supposed to remove a resistor or two inside the REU (no biggy), but some have suggested that even after you do that, might not be wise to use it with the regular 64's 40w power supply.

I've got the two different models available here at my disposal: the really old supply that is user-serviceable and the later brick style with faux cooling fins.

What have you guys been powering your 64's with all these years? Any trouble or issues with REU's? And how about that new $200 "wonder box" coming out for it? Looks really efficient, but will a stock supply be good enough?

I'm not sure about a breadbox 64, but I have used an unmodified 1750 with a 64-C on the default power supply with no issues before.

Hmm... thanks. Yeah, I wonder if the difference lies between the two models. The verbiage isn't clear on it though. I was hoping to use the Breadbox model with the REU, but not a terribly big deal if I end up pulling out my minty C64c. Here's what I keep reading:

The 1700 and 1750 had a resistor at position R4 that, according to Commodore engineer Fred Bowen, compensated for subtle differences in the expansion port on the C64 and C128. The 1764 lacked that resistor. Bowen and other CBM engineers recommended against using a 1764 with a C128 unless the resistor was added, or a 1700/1750 with a C64 unless the resistor was removed.

I had a 1764, it came with a bulkier power supply as part of the package.  I never noticed that with any of the others.

If your talking about the standard black brick, you are taking a chance using them with reu's. They were marginal at best with stock C64, causing many ram failures. Get a heavy duty power supply or build your own. I use my own power supply. If you are talking about Chameleon 64 it uses little power, but as I said earlier you are taking a chance with the standard brick power supply.

Yeah, thanks for that. Am leaning toward NOT hooking this thing up until I have a better power supply. Sounds like too much of a gamble. Thanks all for your input.
