To me, it sounds like the files weren't decompressed on your system...
Playing compressed sounds produces highpitched noises like you describe.

I feel inclined to agree that uploading all files uncompressed would be much
sweeter, even if it took a few minutes longer, one wouldn't have to wait
for the game to launch the first round, which can take quite some time
depending on cpu etc. (And seems to be causing problems for some)
