i just bought a amiga 4000!!!
« on: February 22, 2016, 06:10:40 PM »
I was looking for a A500 but I saw this Amiga 4000 that had a much lower price that the one I saw before on EBAY.  could not resist and clic the buy button.

I paid 850$us I think its a good price no?

now I must do some research.
on how to plug it on a modern LCD monitor. its the same connector that a A500 ? cause it already ordered a dp23 to dp9 cable to use with a A500 I was trying to get.

previous port where I introduce myself:

it depends a bit. your a4000 has the same rgb bort as any other amigas. if you are located in eu then you may be able to use a 50hz compatible lcd tv with an euroscart connector as is, otherwise you might need some ntsc adapter to get a signal over to vga/hdmi or such.

The 4000 has its issues but over all is a great machine. Make sure that you take the cover off first thing and look at the battery. If its still the old barrel type remove it immediately and hopefully it has not already leaked.

The Indivision AGA from Amigakit is your best option for video then you can use any LCD on the market.

Looks like that one already had the battery removed .. if it's the same one that sold earlier on ebay :)

Assuming it doesn't have some kind of graphics card already, +1 for the Indivision.  Configuration can be a little tricky, especially with the AGA version, but being able to use almost any modern monitor with your system does have its perks.  ;)

$850 USD isn't a bad price assuming it's in good condition and has at least what I'd consider "a few modest upgrades".  Buster 11, maxed out RAM, '040 board, no battery leakage, etc.

Have fun!  :)

depends on further cisrcumstances. if its board rev. B (most likely) it will have a barrel battery, then either it has been replaced by the previous owner or not. most important is to look at corrosion traces around it and remove it immediately if there are any. if its rev D it will have a coin type one, that isnt likely to leak as previous but likely needs to be raplaced or removed first.

im not sure a version of indvision compatible with the a4000 si easily available, and would first try to confirm the amiga working reliably before further considerable investments. so id use some simple scan converter first. unfortunately i have displays at hand that do not require any further devices to display amiga signal, so i cant help with it.

If you don't have a monitor, try to get a modern LCD that will sync down to the native 15Khz so it will display the Amiga screen modes.  I have a NEC 1970VX which does this.

Well, for one thing the power supply fan is installed backwards.  ;)

You'll probably want to flip that around to the right way, or replace it outright with a more modern one.  There was a thread on that just a few days ago:

As Mike mentioned above the fan, Also the battery as I talked about.
Other issues that cause problems is due to age, the memory sockets are horrible and they become unstable after some time (cleaning the ram contacts with an eraser helps).
many of the capacitors where installed backwards on the motherboard as well as the 3640 board. This will eventually case failure.

No.  Only if your monitor syncs to 15KHz screenmodes.  Most modern monitors do not.  Certain models of Dell do (2320-something-or-other, search the forums).  Otherwise you will need a scan doubler to promote your Amiga to 31KHz screenmodes.

PS - Indivision says it was expected in-stock last week.  They may have some now, or may be getting them any day.  There are other Amiga hardware vendors too, you know.  ;)

Worst case scenerio, just get yourself a cheap-o A520 adapter to test out and make sure the rest of the system works, while you get your display setup sorted out.  :)

Also, yes, check your caps, as Tonyvdb said.  :)

You can but only ECS screen modes will work.  like DoubleNTSC/PAL, Multiscan, Productivity but NTSC/PAL will not work.  So early startup, and games will not display.  Some very rare monitors, like the one I mentioned a few posts up, will scan to all 15KHz screen modes!  Try to find one of those.  I think there are some BenQ LCD's that also work, use Google to find out more on this topic.

This is partially incorrect.  If your monitor only syncs to 31KHz screenmodes (i.e., most modern monitors), DoubleNTSC/PAL, Multiscan, and Productivity modes should work.  Or at least are supposed to.  ;)  The only problem is you won't be able to see your Workbench to select those modes, since natively it boots up with a 15KHz screenmode.  Also, as TjLazer said, Early Startup and most games, etc., won't work because they use 15KHz screenmodes.
