Title: Mindrover: -Finally- an original game for pc.
Post by: Im>bE on June 01, 2004, 02:04:52 AM

I might even force myself to use a pc
just to try this game/simulation out,
(and copy its ideas in my own games).

Especially when it is about something
that interest me immensely.

But please try it before me,
and tell me if I really should
force a headache on myself
by using a pc to try it.

Sorry, not completely original.  That's just a polished, 3D-graphicky version of an old game called CRobots.  In the original, you had an ascii screen and you programmed the robots in a subset of the C language, but it's all pretty much the same idea.  It's not a bad idea by any stretch, it's just not an original idea :-)

oh... well... when there are only ~2 games
of this type, then it is 5000 times more original
than the FPS type for an example.

So, anyone tried it yet?

I remember a PD game where you had to use a GUI to manually wire up a little junebug to find food and avoid spiders and such.  I can't seem to find a link for it at the moment, though.  Shame, it was really a good educational game for children.  (And the last levels were somewhat challenging for teens to adults, too.)

There's also IBM's Robocode, which is java-based and totally free.  It's more coding intensive than the others, but also has competitions with other users bots, etc.

As far as Mindrovers goes, it looks like they want you to pay to download it.  Personally, it didn't look interesting enough for me to pay to try it.

Back in the stoneage (somewhere around 1989) there was similar game for the Amiga. Tha box even shows Apple][ screenshots. You had to programm the AI of a tank and test it in a combatarea or against other programmed tanks.
The name of the game was OMEGA and was bublished by Origin. I have the box right in front of me but there is only the handbook in it (around 1.5cm thick pagecount: a few hundred), can`t find the disk :-(

I tried Mindrover a few years ago. I don't remember it well; I probably had fun for a couple of minutes.

There is another similar but better game, whose name I unfortunately don't remember, involving programming robots to get ore, kill baddies, etc. on different planets. You can (must) also control some guy in a space suit so it's also an action game. I'll try to find the name...

Edit: found it! it's Colobot ( http://www.colobot.com/ )
