Yes, I use a towel to cover up the Amiga
« on: July 13, 2019, 08:12:03 AM »
I admit to using a towel to cover my Amiga 1200 when it is not in use. This to protect it from the light. Guess it is time to take the plunge and purchase a more classy dustcover.  ;D

Any other using towels as a protective measure? Hehe..  8)

I have a large pillow case folded up which covers an A600 fully, and like a small table cloth over my A1200. This is despite them already having dust covers. AmigaKit have some new ones in stock which I might take a look at. Although I'm sure they won't be as effective as a towel! What sort of towel do you use? I've been thinking of upgrading to a really thick towel or similar but you have to be aware of the weight pushing down on the keys...not good in the long term for the key springs.

I just use towels also. This is my A1200 daily driver I bought about 10 years ago from Italy. Still white as ever. The towel is medium thickness and is always in place when the A1200 is not in use. The mouse is always under the towel too. I like AmigaKit’s cover but If I get one I would probably put the cover over the towel anyway.

White towels are the best as they reflect the light and keep the heat down!
By the way gizzy, you appear to have the same wireless card as me poking out of your A1200 there.

Glad to see I'm not the only towel user here! ;D

I'm using a blue, well-used towel from many moons ago. Maybe it is time to change to another color, perhaps with an Amiga patch sewn onto it?

@giZmo350

Nice photos of your setup (and towel)! :)

That's a GREAT idea! Sell in sets of 5 each! All 5 different. Make them very colorful like the Amiga.org logo. Horizontal and Vertical models - verticals to hang in the guest bath!

@paul1981 - my FAV wireless card! Got mine for $6.00 on ebay - brand new still shrink wrapped. Then ebay'ers found out that they are great for Amigas and the prices shot to $50.00+.

@broadblues - LOL

@AmigaOldskooler - Yeah! Show us your towel! LOL

@TribbleSmasher - Right! NO smelly (or stained) towels allowed! EWE....

The card is a Netgear MA-401 (16bit - you can't use a 32bit card). There are 3 of them on eBay right now. Keep in mind, if you buy a brand new one in the box, you will have to flash the firmware as, out of the box, it only supports WEP & WPA. NOT WPA2, which is essential. I used my old Thinkpad 600 w/WinXP to flash the card (software is still available) as the PCMCIA slot is 16bit. Also, I use AmiTCP with AmigaKit's EasyNet software (using the Prism2.device). IMO, the software is very easy to use (there are many other software choices though).

Here's a link for the card....  ;)

Here's a link to Netgear's support page....

What is the model number of the PCMCIA wireless card?

These cards have different labels but identical model numbers. Some years back now I used the MA-401 with the gear coggs in the label and the man looking out over the blue sky (you'll see some on e-bay), but when the time came to upgrade it from WEP to WPA2 I just couldn't get it to work. I then bought another one but this time with the plain orangy yellow apricot type label (exactly like the one in gizzy's photo) and I upgraded the firmware in that to WPA2 without issue and it still works beautifully to this day. I don't have the particular details to hand but I'm pretty sure they were different in some way. I still have that old WEP card, and I might have another crack at it one day, but it's at the bottom of my to-do list.

Hi AmigaKit,

Any news on some fancy towels now that spring and summer is approaching? 8) Small towels for protecting our precious Amiga's, big towels for using outside on the beach or a picnic, or after a nice bath. :D
