Looks like SkyOS has bitten the dust...

We may be coming to the end of line for new OSs that try to be mainstream.

What we\'re witnessing is the sad, lonely crowing of that last, doomed cock.

After reading the SkyOS Halt statement I realized that the future of OSes will either be niche on hardware - like AmigaOS,Open Source based off an existing platform like Linux Based Distros, or new versions of current popular platforms like Windows and MAC OS X.

I miss the days of the 80s when entire companies created and maintained platforms. It may be to expensive to do that today, but I can't think of a time since the 80s that the "Personal Computer" was so exciting with choices.

All the popular Linux distros are trying to look and work like windows.  Microsoft is trying to look/feel like Macs and Macs aren't sure what the heck they want to do next - just hide the Unix command line from users!

I remember a time when Atari, Commodore, Coleco, IBM, Tandy, Apple and others had entire computer/OSes that where unique with loyal users pushing them forward.  Now we just have the big three all trying to look and work like each other - making them bland!

Maybe that's why I've fallen back in love with my old Amigas!

Just reading up on SkyOS seems to be a pretty decent OS.  Shame its going to  die.

I think AmigaOS and it's variants/derivatives could find a niche in the settopbox market easily. I was checking linux sat receivers the other day and was shocket to see that 3rd party images and even native ones of various receivers have a boot time of 30 seconds!! And on time critical apps like erm.... cardsharing:) some even manage to fail when running just a few at the same time. The reason seems to be that all these are time critical applications. Guess which OS was very good at time critical stuff like analog video genlocking and stuff...
Just my lame opinion anyway..
