Amiga 3000 fastram suddenly disappeared.
« on: December 01, 2020, 01:50:31 PM »
My A3k's is fully populated with 16Mb of ZIP memory. It's always worked fine without issues for the past six months. Suddenly this morning, the memory is showing as 0.

What could be causing this? Would a reseating of the chips help?

AmigaOS 3.1.4.1, motherboard rev 09/03, daughterboard rev 07/01, Super Buster 11.

Yes, you need to reseat your zip memory.

Recommend being very careful, in a well lit area.  Make sure your grounded and patiently go over each one.

May as well seat the other chips while your at it and inspect battery, assuming you didn't remove it.

If you have 60NS SC zipps don't forget to get speed geeks ramsey program if you have a stock 030, makes a nice boost.

If your really bored you can read my slightly outdated 3000 and backup post:

Thanks @matt3k, reseating the ZIPs worked. Must be the temperature changes recently, the weather is getting a bit cooler down here.

I actually did read up your buyer's guide - thanks for writing it. I've switched the PALs to GALs a while ago.

I suggest trying running to following utility from aminet

https://aminet.net/package/util/misc/ZIPTest

This little program has helped me track down a bunch of zip ram issues in my A3000s (I have three).

@Moto
Nice find.  Doesn't work either on 3000T or Ramsey 07.

Nice find.  Doesn't work either on 3000T or Ramsey 07.

I don't have access to an A3000T. What kind of problem are you seeing with ziptest on 3000T? Does it report false problems, wrong component, not see the memory or something else? I wasn't aware of differences between Ramsey versions relative to fast memory row/column addressing. Is this what you've observed?

I will have to let you know...

My powersupply went on the T.  Will take me some time to get that sorted...

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I’m trying ZIPtest on my 3000D with ramsey 07. ZIPTest reports:

”Unrecognized Ramsey version $ff - this program only works on an Amiga 3000”

@cdh   Is it possible to patch it to work with ramsey 07 (Rev $f)?

Try this simple fast memory test which performs exactly the same checks in the same way as the C= ROM does, and reports differences between what data was read back and what was expected to be read back.  It's not as fancy as ZIPtest, but at least gives you a starting point in where to look for problems.

http://amiga.serveftp.net/Temp/A4000RAMTest.lha

I got sick of trying to fault find hardware issues where other testing solutions reported that the memory was working fine, when it clearly wasn't.  I've not written any documentation on it, but should be self explanitory enough.

It's intended for the A4000, though the A3000 fast memory operates pretty much the same way, so don't see why it wouldn't work.

The issue i have is my 3000 doesnt register the fast ram when I try with ZIPs (DRAM works ok). I have populated Bank 0 but I get no fast ram. I do not know if it's a problem with the sockets (which I suspect) or the ZIP modules themselves, hence why i'd like to use ZIPTest's capabilities to see if the sockets are ok. I'm not sure A4000RAMTest would do much for me given the machine does not detect the ZIP modules at the moment.

Ok, Chris got in touch and ZIPTest can be run using the FORCE flag!

I'm not sure A4000RAMTest would do much for me given the machine does not detect the ZIP modules at the moment.

The way that the fast memory addition works is that the system performs a check starting at 0x08000000 and then decrements every 1MB and tests again until it eventually sees a failure.  Any 1MB blocks of memory it sees as valid in this continuous range is added as system memory.

If you have any kind of error (e.g. even a single data bit) at the first test, then it'll silently fail, and you'll have no system memory added for no obvious reason.

The purpose of A4000RAMTest is to report the result of each 1MB memory test so you know what kind of problem you're facing.  For example, if you have a single bit error in the bottom 4 bits of the 32-bit word that was read back, but the upper 28 bits are OK, then you can conclude that the problem is with the first ZIP that has data bus D0-D3 connected.  So this is exactly how it could help you.

But great that Chris has sorted out the issue you were having, he's done an impressive job with ZIPtest.

Yes, ziptest did the job perfectly - it showed a problem with U850 and U851 on Bank 0, and with U870 and U871 on Bank 2. I used contact cleaner and crimped the zip modules legs together so they griped the insides of the sockets rather than trying to push out into the pin-damaged sockets.

Banks 0 and 1 now work so I have 8MB. I think 870 and 871 require being replaced, sadly.
