Amiga does not see PAR hard drive
« on: May 30, 2014, 08:05:49 AM »
I have a Connor CFA1275 hooked up to my PAR card, the PAR software sees the drive fine (DDR:) but it will not show up in Workbench, Directory Opus or any other programs.
Any idea what needs to be done to get it to show up in Workbench?

Dave

Could it be that the hard drive is a dedicated part of the PAR system and not available directly to the Amiga? It wouldn't surprise me if it is using a proprietary disk format.

You are correct, it is for use by the PAR use only to record animations

I did a search before I posted this, and read in another post that it would show up as an Amiga drive in Workbench, but if it will not show as an Amiga drive, how do you do a backup?

It supports up to 2 drives, but your animations are meant to be output to a VCR

The PAR acts as a VIRTUAL DRIVE in workbench. You must be running the PAR software in order for the PAR to be recognized by Lightwave or Workbench.

If you are running the PAR software then in order to view the PAR drive you use the drive name DDR:  It will not show up on your desktop.

Open a CLI and type DDR: and you should see the PAR drive.

Hope that helps

Thanks, that works.
With PAR open, and the window moved to the back, an icon for DDR: does come up on the Workbench screen, nothing comes up in AmiBack or Directory Opus, but if I type DDR: in the drive path, they both find the drive, so now I can use Amiback to backup the drive to tape.

Thanks again.

Indeed, thanks for the tip! Does anyone have a quick link to a PAR drive table or an idea what drives will realistically work?

Seagate ST31220A 1gig
Connor CFA1275A 2.27gig
Micropolis 2217A 1.6gig
Seagate ST3600A ? gig
Seagate Medalist ST34321A 8 gig (I think)
quite a few other Seagate STxxxxA drives will work with this card, the 13GB ST313021A worked (as an 8GB drive) with the PAR card.

The maximum size IDE drive the PAR will recognize is 8GB. Any drive larger than that will show as an 8GB drive.

Most older IDE drives work fine with PAR. The Recommended drives at the time were the Mircopolis 1gb and 2gb ide drives. And yes as stated you must use smaller hard drives. Wonder if a cf would work? Maybe not  because of proprietary filessystem?

Thank you for the list, I actually have some of these. I should have enough stuff here to try a small CF with a PAR. I'm not sure where it lies on my list of priorities though. Maybe a slow Sunday project.

I tried some CF drives on mine, and none of them worked, I also tried a 40 gig drive, it worked fine but only formatted to 8 gigs.

8GB is the max the PAR drive can see due to the limitations of the BIOS on the PAR.
