Interesting article about female characters in games
« on: April 18, 2003, 12:00:07 PM »
Here's a rather interesting article on the perception of females in computer games. I for one agree wholeheartedly with the writer. Whenever I play a game and a female character is presented as 90% breast and 1% brain it ticks me off instantly.

Any other opinions on this?

Wot is wrong with seeing two perfectly computer generated girls feeding each other strawberries!

I think people need to lighten up.

Nothing ofcourse, that's also not the point of the author. What she's trying to say (amongst other things) is that sexism can ruin a game if you don't expect it in a game or if it's just placed in the wrong context. Like her example of Baldur's Gate.

Well.. it's cause game makers expect certaing kind of target audience for their games. (make a guess, what kind)

This issue has been around much longer than computer games have had graphics. Anyone ever played roleplaying games can wittness certain 'twist' in characters shown on those manuals.   ;-)

Itdoesn't bother me, but I don't play that many games.  When more womenbother to learn how to code and start writing games instead of just "project managing"  then we'll probably see a change in the content of these games.  Untl then....... boys will be boys.....

I note how the presentation of an overtly sexual image of Lara Croft having (gasp!) breasts and such is "gross" whereas (Arcanum) using sex in an insidious and manipulative fashion (as a weapon) is "Brilliant!".

Speaks volumes methinks.

HEHEHE, I bought a Dreamcast system just for the breast play in Dead or Alive 2 not to mention the upskirt shots also.  I think its great that the girls look great, hell, its better than seeing two fat chicks in mini-skirts and thongs with drooping saging breasts and crators in their thighs. Good looking well endowed woman help sell the games too.

not to mention anything in a skirt that flys up looks good for as long as its not a fat chick or a fat man in a kilt! (or any man for that matter)
There was a time I can remember computers were fun...I miss my A1200.

And for the same reason. A game with men I could never hope to look as good well, would sell well in the girls market. She has some good points though. (although Lara Croft was made for 13 year old boys, its made to sell, not to be good, its a mass market game ya' know, and boys were even more dominant in gaming back when it released)

Marketing as usual.  :-)

I mean, take a look at the nVidia site.  When you see the "Dawn" demo for the GeForce FX, who do you think the target audience is?

Of course, not even sex can sell the FX, but that's another story...

;-) Personally, I’m all in favor of powerful female characters in video games.  One of my favorite games is Capcom’s® Pocket Fighter, and my favorite character from that title is Hsien-ko, a zombie ghost girl with more special moves than any of the other characters.

:-D Now if only Capcom® will write a Pocket Fighter 3-D for the new Amiga One!
