Thats precisely what worries me - the only people who might be infringing on any associated patents would be whom ? and how does that help the scene grow ?

Patents? Actually, I wrote about copyright. One of the components that are lost is the hdwrench.library by Joanne Dow. Hence, the 3.9 HDToolBox is not available anymore, unless Joanne releases the copyright.  Another component that is lost is the narrator.library, originally from Softvoice. Narrator is lost since 2.1, actually, probably for the same reason.

If you have a copy of 3.9, you can of course still use the binaries, but they cannot be included in the bugfix release for this very reason.

This should, finally, explain the "door 3" option Olaf mentioned a while ago. I afraid nobody understood the pointer, and I had a hard time keeping my mouth shut.

But yes, there is quite something. Please do not expect a revolutionary step, it is - if the text wasn't already explicit enough - a bugfix release.

:)

Well, Im sure you anticipate 100 questions even tho you CLEARLY state its a bugfix release;

Do you have anything planned for the future beyond this? I guess the answer hinges on the demand for the bugfix release etc...?

They are currently V45 and V46, if this makes you feel any better. From what I currently have, components come always from the latest version of which copyright and source were available, and I hope we can keep it this way.

This is often, but not always what was delivered with 3.9. Not all authors did transmit copyright in the past, and for some components, we simply do not know.

Thanks!  That is helpful.  Shame about HDToolbox though, as you mentioned. Since this is a pretty essential tool for using modern drives.  The obvious next question would be, is anyone in the development team still in touch with her that could ask?

There will be a HDToolBox, with all features included as needed. It is just based on the one from Os 3.1. The GUI looks as ugly as the source code, but it works.

Yes Jens' mentioned A1200 Reloaded development is a long way already, but announcements weren't possible yet because he has applied for a patent for some features.

This doesn't make sense. If he applied for a patent, he can talk all he wants about it because he has got his rights secured.

You typically do not want to talk until you have at least a pending patent. This typically takes some days before you get your notification. Been there, done that.

the update for AmigaOS 3.1 is apparently not small. here is a photo of all the changes currently complete by olaf barthel and thomas richter courtesy of the amigaworld.de twitter account. way to go, hyperion!!

Wow!! I will need to do some 'clean installs' in the future. If an updated 3.1 with all the fixes, updates and patches became available that would be 'most excellent' indeed.

If that goofy 4GB limit on the first/boot partition could be lifted that would be a nice bonus.

Nice work Thor and Olaf. :)

Then the correct wording and tense would have been: "I am going to apply for a patent".

I don't think there are too many of us here that care too much that it isn't revolutionary. I think we are just appreciative that you've taken the time to make improvements. Thank you very much!

How do the naming conventions in Amiga updates work. If 3.1 is updated wouldn't it be 3.2 or 3.5 or 3.9? Oh wait, the last two already exist.

I wonder what has motivated this development? The sale of the stand alone Vampire/ A1200 Reloaded? There's got to be money in this but if you've already got OS 3.9 why bother so it must be for new hardware IMHO.

That's what I was thinking... however, Mike raises some interesting points regarding OS3.9 and these new OS3.1 bug fixes.

Arbitrarily, it is hard to see any consistent system.

Feature request for HDToolBox - the ability to input size of partition in MiBs. Dragging sliders is no good solution when you want a 512MiB partition on a 1TB disk, unless an option to "zoom" in and out is also added, and adjusting total number of cylinders up and down manually is also tedious.
