Title: Amiga Gathering in Second Life
Post by: Valis on July 02, 2010, 05:20:32 AM
Hello!

I don't know if many have heard but there is going to be an Amiga Demo Party in Second Life this August.
http://virtuamigaparty.xooit.fr/index.php

I was thinking that in order to get more people to attend we should do a weekly meet up in Second Life.  This way people that have never used Second Life can log on and get use to using it.

Second Life accounts are free.  I know sometimes there is resistance to new technology and there is especially a lot of misconception around Second Life, but it is pretty cool technology and to me it is just the next step from IRC.

I was thinking we can meet up at the IBM site.  We just need to nail down a date and time that works best.  You can talk in Second Life like IRC or with a microphone if you choose.  If you don't use a mic you can still listen and just type yourself.

Here is a link to the IBM site.
http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/IBM%20China%20BIC/120/188/30

If you need any help getting on please post in this thread.

I'll show up for a meetup. I've had an account there for years, haven't signed on in months. Any time is good with me.

That's a great idea - the next best thing after a real Amiga party :-) Btw, what are the HW requirements for SL? I'm currently in the process of upgrading my graphics card. I suppose I could use my mom's computer, she has ATI X200 IGP, that should suffice for the lowest settings...

800 MHz Pentium III or Athlon, or better
512MB of RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 6600 or better
OR ATI Radeon 8500, 9250 or better
OR Intel 945 chipset

I just use a system with the built in Intel chipset and it runs pretty good.

Well it's looking good so far.

I had second life with a passion.  I don't have time enough to lead my real life without playing some idiot game that you have raise money just to buy yourself a decent A-Eon widget...

I'm quite happy with my real life A-Eon widget thank you very much, I was born with it and it's not detachable....

When I am in IRC I usually talk about the same things and write about myself. In SL it is very tempting to talk more about the fictional or virtual life of your AV, Artwork in SL and the people who created it. In fact, I hated it when people asked me about RL! But there were others that used it like IRC, some used their land like homepages... And yes, there is the disco-folks too. Very diverse community.

But the place is pretty much deserted now. Many ambitious guys couldn´t afford the rent and so the best islands vanished and took part of the crowd with them.

Some pople who are much into building things joined the "open simulator" project, which uses the same kind of servers with a different twist and far less costly - but you have to be willing to invest some time and are talking to a much smaller audience.

I switched my laptop into NVidia mode to run the Second Life, and there's not a single person in IBM land!

..and now the laptop is starting to smell like burning hair.

I had my own experience in that 'Game'.

I logged on to see what the fuss was about, got invited to a party somewhere, I still had not mastered the controls (Yes, even simple walking), the Dance owner said "You are bumping in to people, stop it or I kick you"

So I logged out, and deinstalled the software :)

I don't think I have ever seen anybody in the IBM China area either.  It is free to use and since it is deserted that is why I thought it would be a good place to meet.

@all

SecondLife is a just a software tool like IRC or a Web browser.  And again this about getting ready and getting use to the software so we have more people prepared for the Demo Party in August.

As far as the comments on SecondLife itself all I can say is that I guess it is like the rest of the Internet.  IRC, WWW, Usenet and things.   If you go to IRC and go into an Amiga channel chances are things will be what you expect.  If you just join random IRC channels you are probably going to find things you never ever wanted to find, know, read, or hear.  Same with the Web.  You go to Amiga.org, Slashdot, Google, and you get what you expect.  Think of all the strange bizarre things that are on the Web.  Yet we are all still here and unaffected by most of the crazy stuff out there. If you start going to strange Web sites and random places chances are you will find things that will fry your retinas.

My experience in SecondLife is much more limited then some I'm sure.  The University I attended had it's own virtual campus in Second Life and I had a class that was totally in SL.  About 40 people and obviously very professional.  I've used it as tool to do meetings with people.   I've never really just explored people's random sites(islands) or even talked to strangers in SecondLife.

It all depends on how you use the tool, just like the web.  SecondLife offers IRC type communication and free Voice over internet communication in groups.  The big bennefits for the Demo Party are the ability to display art in a gallery type form, stream Demo music compilations, and the big one stream Video to a group of us in real time.

I think this will be fun and looks like we have quite a few people interested.  Hopefully all will join in for a little fun!

Outside of going to school in SL, this would give me a fun reason to be there.
Most of the time I do not even log on.

There are only two things to do in SL: taunt Prokofy Neva, and launch peniscopters at Anshe Chung press conferences.

And you can do the first one without using Second Life.

40 people is already a large group in SL. Go to a 100 and it sometimes starts to get real slow.

If voice wasn´t as important (I prefer typing in SL) then you could of course serve those needs equally well by going to sites like Ustream or Make.tv, right?

Anyways, I like the idea of an SL-Amiga party and will certainly try to attend, if I happen to have the time. So, where and when?

Well I'm thinking maybe we could make it Sundays at 7pm London time.  (Avoiding GMT as daylight saving times always messed me up)

I'm probably not available tomorrow, but would be able to be there next Sunday.  Not that I need to be there.  (You can of course log on and look around and maybe run into other Amiga users when ever.  Just like irc.)

I'm thinking this time choice will avoid any conflicts with the weekly IRC chat that happens about 8 hours later on Sunday.

If anyone has better suggestions for time let me know.
As far as location I suggest this site,
http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/IBM%20China%20BIC/120/188/30

So once you install the free client you can use that link to take you to the area where we meet.

As far as when and where the Demo Party is in August, I'm not sure.  I don't think it has been announced, but http://virtuamigaparty.xooit.fr/index.php is the place to check.   If you have any mod making skills or drawing skills and things I think they are glad to except contributions for the Demo Party.

hello to all !

so nice to see your answers about it !

oops let's present myself (frenchie here so sorry for frenglish ^^)

so we are , vital motion, pirats.fr for land, amiga cloando and wda-fr.org for prices
and amiga impact for partership, making this virtual party for the 25th anniversary

the land isn't made already but hummm i put a video on the forum to present
you as i could be. we think that as normal parties we will make 3 hours during
the 2 both first days speed compos , next to all the compos decided in our
forum

prizes are going from a premium amiga cloando forever 2010, to a zxsinclair from wda
and finally a mug of the party from my pocket

be sure all people making that doesn't make any money on it. pure rulez as over

it would be so cool to discover you in any product : gfx aga or ng, intro as the same, demos, modules and mp3 & finally wild compos

well it would be a pleasure to see you participate to it

the land has to be built , sorry for delay , things are coming

and after all a great dj mix with .. you'll see on last day !

i think i will put on divx by a virtual cam all the demoparty and so give acces to
all who would have a souvenir of it as an hd video to download

and then thanx yet to valis who isn't from vital motion but who makes us so
pleasure !! as he participate to the compos, i will give himm the opportunity
after the event to join us ? what do you think of valis?

I would honored.  Thank you very much.  I've had an Amiga for over 20 years and have never been able to make it to a demo party.  When I saw this event I thought I would be a great opportunity and I think the more people the more fun!

OK, Sunday(today/tomorrow depending where you are) 7pm London Time I will be logged in.  http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/  This site can help to know when it is 7pm in London.

http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/IBM%20China%20BIC/120/188/30
Will get you to the right place in the SecondLife viewer/browser.

It will probably just be some chatting and helping new people to learn how to use the software to do things like walk around and look at things. I hope to see lots of people there. Please don't be afraid to log in. It's just software. :)

Pity I read about this so late (I'm so out of touch with the Amiga scene nowadays) - I would have let you set up at my island, I've been hanging around SL since it left beta... it gets a lil tiresome from time to time, but something that financed my long lost A2000 can't be all bad.

rhaaaaaaaaaaaa i did it !

then the linux official client of sl is giving video when ALL gstream components are
installed

of course it works with the win version but for amigafans i thought it would be cool
to have video on event trought linux 32 version. it works with OFFICIAL sl client from
sl, i mean the sl2 version by their website

in day and time, private video servers will be held for this event

so happy to present you a cool event without windows xp or vista or seven for them
as me who dislike unstable system especially by SL

now we are looking foward people in english speaking for any conference online,
if any people is interested by pleaz tell me and write to : vitalmotion@free.fr

hello all !

now the party has his own land, next to mine

i mean my land , an art galery on sl and next to it, the building for the virtuamiga party

if you have second life, just search in mature contents (just to make the search better i hope)
"virtuamigaparty" and you will be in an empty building , right now but video and sound servers are
already tested in, in full perm that means i can have ~100 persons in same time.

a lot of compos real ones with real prizes will be held in, other typically sl compos too but only about amiga !

hummm seems to write too much here ^^ regards to all

hop la i go back to video editing

here finally a pic from the land and tryings of video and audio

all is working

i have to modelize better the a500 and the monitors but well
everything is rather working

if you have any idea ?

hello hello all

the party is going to be something cool

plenty of things to think to do to build

but as theses screens show you, there is video and shoutcast sound
now.

don't blame me about build 500's, it's temporaly

just know humm even if it 's on personnal server (so not good upload rate)
that i tried to put 20mn of pure delight in.

begin of course in my eyes by the darkroom intro which was the best
one ever seen from me. something in 40ko and a concept, a dzign
and fantastic strobo chiptune

we are going to make something cool

our coders are evalueting sl code to propose you cool surprises

even if not a real event, cool event to meet between countries and
out of europe too. for example i didn't ever went to a US demo party
or the last japanese one. as a french i go to main and a few others

so i think this sort of party should be cool as something other
even if we have to search for real sponsors and real prizes

help us to make it better as now it's sure to be real (on sl ^^)

regards to all , and who know's

hello persia how are you ?

just remember sl is just another medium !

not finally the thing itself

i promise you a cool meeting as i have new contacts
for dancing on chiptunes and so

even if you dislike sl and i do understand why, this is a medium
which is what you do with

the main goal of the meet is to propose a cool event on sl
for example for people who wants to demomake outside
of usa or the same for cows land in europe away from
nothing

do not try to destruct, just try to build and you'll see what i try
to make real by sl

No problem.  I know you have put a lot of work into it.  Hopefully someday it will all come together.  I've seen lots of pictures and it's pretty amazing everything you have done.  Maybe in a few years we can all get together.  I think it will be fun.

More practical than being able to communicate with people from across the planet in real time?

I don't get why people bash Second Life.  It's a computer app.  Sure people use it for lame stuff, but companies like IBM, Cisco, AMD, Sun etc have dozens of public and private sites on Second Life.  People making fun of Second Life is as ignorant as people saying the "Internet" is just for games and porn and can't be used for anything practical.

I'm not really a SL user.  I used it a for a class at University and then a few times getting ready for this Amiga gathering.  But I can't believe people bash technology with so much potential when they clearly have never tried it.

SL has lost many of its active users by now. So in most respects it is like IRC. Still going, but not very useful unless you want to talk to random strangers.

Facebook and farmville are something for people who really aren´t into computers and always have to look at the keyboard to find the "any key" (hint: Lamers!).

Thanks for the link mate!. Will check it out when i have the time. Also, have you tried to use also opensimulator?.*It's a secondlife variant but in opensource, and you can have your own grid in your computer and have it connected with the rest using Hypergrid. I look at it and i'm setting up some grids for testing purposes.
Also, having your own sim saves you the hassle of having to buy or rent land in sl.

@Iggy
I don't understand your bashing. Second life and similar sims are interesting for people who like scripting and rendering of 3d models, and for people to likes new technologies. Of course, is also intended for average users that only want to chat or another things. I don't see the inconvenience in  there.

@the crown

heyhey two time i can't make the event. not about sl linden money but lack of time ! actually i'm part of an art real association on second life which this evening will recreate the real event as my personnal exposition in a cool and huge gallery :) as to answer to people who tells things about sl without knowing the best way to play sl is to link to reality. as sl to share art, links and so on. as sl to meet people without any distance exept time zone. as a new (from 2003 ok :) )medium as cool as irc but well every one can tell right or wrong about it. and yes irc is non payed.

ok go to see with cool friends of vitalmotion to thing at first what is possible to do as event and AFTER build it with sponsors. as not only amiga meeting but also c64, cpc 6128 and 6128+, thomson to8d, amiga ng (as morphos 1.4.5 i'm posting on) and surely linux

sl is a good medium when good using

if irc/sl war is beginning after atari/amiga one hwoooooo hey i won't be part of

respect to valis and the crown for believing it.

surrely in more than a year a new event will be held

The building is gone. Guess this means there will be no meetings of Amiga-Fans in SL in the near future?

I think one problem of meeting Amigans in SL is that there really is no way to participate in SL if your main computer is an Amiga. They should make a text only or 2D client. Which would be great for cellphones too.
Title: Re: Amiga Gathering in Second Life

@ismart : hello helo ! yes i sold the building because of mainly 40€ each both for both. the building as a pyramid is my personnal galery ( just next) , the white one. in the past there was a relay text chat version but not any in my eyes. the good point is that my actual building which will be and stay is perfect for any meet betweens amiga owners. just put a linux next to you your miga to come as in a big big client or by a softy one. you have to search for third party clients second life by google and try and found the one your personnal computer will be able to execute. then no not any chance to make a real meeting as a virtual party anymore, two tries and no time for but monthly meets would be great in my pyramidal building if any interested in helping me for

as watching demos , other streams we choice before

regards to you all and apologies to all
