Title: Question about hard drives

I was given a couple of PC's with dead IDE hard drives. To pass the time, I dismantled one of them and found a little compartment covered with paper in the head of the chassis that held teensy-tiny glass spheres. Does anyone know what the purpose of them is?

It's probably silica gel used as desiccant.

I was surprised to see some dust on the platters.
