No more Emulator for me - Want an Amiga
« on: April 12, 2011, 09:01:30 AM »
So people... Been on and of since the Amiga days ended in 1995 for me... Been making a setup once in a while with E-UAE ... But it does not satisfy me anymore.

I want a real Amiga again.

What should I go for ?

I want to have it hooked up with my 42 Inch LED Flat Screen.... I want to draw some sprites in Deluxe Paint, for using with some coding in AMOS again ... Havent done that since 1995 and miss programming :-)

Should I buy an Amiga 600 HD ? Or a 1200 ... Or go totally retro and get me a 500+ ?

I want a HD in it ! ... And at least kickstart 2.0

What is the best buy ? Sorry for my poor english.

And by the way... Where is Motorolin ????

If you want a hard drive best to get an A600 or A1200 really.

Compact flash with IDE to compact flash adaptor way to go.

For your tv output I suggest you get the Amigamaniac SVHS adaptor works great and flicker free on LCD TV's.

I'd recommend a 1200 rather than a 600, more expansion opportunities.

Need any help let us know.  I also recommend for retro gaming purposes to get WHD Load, a great program and worthy of buying.

I also got alot of Amos stuff still, including all the Amos programming books ever written and the Amos Aussie News letter from issue 2 to 9.

If you want to transfer your AMOS knowledge to PC, I heartily recommend Dark Basic Pro (now free with the advert supported version).

Best of luck with it all!

The A1200 won't cost much more than the A600 second hand (well, in the UK/Europe). And you get twice the ram, twice the speed (and it doubles again as soon as you add fast ram), and more colours/resolution choices, plus it will run most of your old OCS/ECS stuff (especially with WHDload). It's a no brainer really, unless you only want to program OCS/ECS.

With AMOS you're pretty much stuck ECS land unfortunately, they never did release an Amos that officially supported VGA.

But anyway, get an Amiga 1200.  I think you'll regret getting an Amiga 600 in the long run as for the reasons others have stated already.

Check out amigamaniac web site for info on things you may want.

go for that a1200. that a600 is neat but very limited and got no aga.....

you should get this....

a1200, joystick, amiga mouse, composite/s-video cabel, aos3.1(and aos3.5/3.9 if needed)
ide2flashcard and a 1gb flash card for the hd
indivision for good display on your flat screen
an acceleration card blizzard 030 and 32mb ram or a blizzard 060 64mb ram or other 030/060 cards, 16mb is minimum
an pcmcia card reader that you can use flashcards with for easy transfer between the pc and amiga
an pcmcia network card for internett/network etc
an usb thingy for the clock port so you can connect a usb mouse/flashpen/extern hd/extern cdrom...

and some old floppies... always good to have a few, you never know when you need one..

if you need a sound card and can find a melody1200(then you also need a clock port expander), then you can play mp3 and do some more seriouse music making..

i think that pretty much cover it...

Have you rulled out a MiniMig... That is what I would use for AMOS/DeluxPaint/OctaMed work on a modern TV now... The advantages over the old commodore machines are too numerous to mention :)

I guess if you want to pay 3x the price for an ECS machine, with no case or keyboard as standard, then  minimig is the way to go ;)

Seriously though, minimig is meant to be upgradable in the future isn't it? AGA etc. How far have they got with that?

I recently bought an Amiga 1200 on ebay, I was very satisfied with the condition of it.

About a week later I was lucky to get an Amiga 1200 from Amigakit and the condition was superb. The one I got from ebay suddenly looked like crap when compared to the one from Amigakit.

So my suggestion is to contact Amigakit and see if they have any left or arriving soon. A bit more expensive, but mine was is excellent condition so I think it was really worth the extra money.

And while your at it, order a ACA 1230 accelerator like I did so you get the extra RAM, great for gaming with whdload =)

PS. And as "tasmanian guy" said, a pcmcia with cf-card for transfering files is nice to have, or networking.... or both =)

An ECS machine won't interface properly with a modern TV, won't have as much RAM, will need adaptor to have an HD... And the ECS machine could die any moment. The ECS machine will need adaptor for a new Mouse/keyboard... Etc...

The OP doesn't need AGA as he is using AMOS :)

That is the replay, apparently at A1200 level :)
