The benchmark data really means nothing without a comparison to other gfx solutions running on the same hardware.
Other than that it was a pretty good review.

I choose to use a voodoo 3 3000 card as recommended by Elbox for video. Any of the voodoo cards will work however if you have the updated voodoo driver. Next I installed the TrendNET 10/100 Ethernet card. This card is based off the RTL8139D chipset. Only RealTek chipsets can be used at this time with the mediator and a voodoo card must be installed for any 100 speed card to work. I then installed a SoundBlaster PCI 128 card; again make sure you have a voodoo card installed for this to work.

eh ? So you must have a Voodoo 3 GFX card to use
anything else with this ??? What's up with that ? Some kind of weird drivers ?

1st I have to admit that I'm not an expert on the mediator  ;-)

The A1200-trap-door connector has only 24 address-lines limiting
it to 16mb. Out off these only the 8mb (ZII) fast-mem area is free.
(RAM on the turbo is mapped above 16mb).

PCI is 2gb of address-room.

Now this is what Elbox does:

Map 8mb of the Voodoo into the A1200-address-space and
than route all acceses to any PCI-card through these 8mb.

Still weird  ;-)

Not that I'm against a Voodoo card, and it's not like PCI gfx cards are easy to get (well different models that is) but maybe they should have opted for a "put some mem on the mediator to route all acces..)

But then, I'm no hardware designer...

I just see it's the A3000-version, and AFAIK that problem
exists only with the A1200 ....

/me is a bit confused

The Voodoo is the only (reasonable) GFX-card supported by
any PCI-adapter atm, and I'm sure that 99% buy a Mediator
primarly for the use with a GFX-card.

(thats why I never accepted Elbox in the P96-dispute)

So, how does one get a resolution of 640 x 480 x 8 with ECS and "NO GRAPHICS CARD"?

I guess P96Speed 1.2 doesn't see a GFX card on a mediator ? Or just dowsn't know what a Voodoo card is ? It doesn't show on the list on the p96 homepage..

lol

ok let me put you strate but Kronos is right about the mem mapping for most part.

ok you need the gfx card in so that the eithernet & TVcard & such can DMA to the voodoo3
mem as its faster than going to system mem & uses very little or no cpu power

I picked up a Mediator for my A4000T and I have to say I'm extremely impressed with it.  I would have to say that in the case of the A3/4000T models, the type of Zorro card you can put in your case is somewhat limited.  On the A4000T, access to one video slot MAY be possible, but it's pretty close to the PCI daughterboard.  Software installation wasn't as simple as with the Prometheus regarding the Voodoo 3 drivers, but functional.  It people were hesitant in getting one, I'd say give it a shot.  Access to inexpensive Video cards, sound cards and ethernet cards is fantastic.  The newer Zorro sound and USB cards should fit and not be affected by the PCI daughter board as those cards are only the length of the Zorro connector.  I'm so impressed with the Mediator that I would consider a SharkPPC if and when they became available.
