Diabolical wasn't it.

Though for the sake of superstition I'd just like to say that I sat down to watch the game minutes before Beckham missed the penalty, and it kind of tailed off from there :-)

Why on earth he took Rooney off and replaced him with that donkey
Heskey i'll never know!  Stupid decision.

France were the better team. England scored with a free kick and decided just to defend the rest of the game. They were punished for it.

And by the way, the ITV commentator mentioned 1966 before five minutes had passed. As usual. And they wonder why people like it when they lose. :)

@kenny

yet more anti-english nationalism i see.

Did you watch the same game I watched? England were all over france.

France scored form a free kick and a penalty.  Feck all to do with
France being the better team.  Check the Opta stats in the papers
tomorrow, they'll show that Engalnd dominated the game for most of it.

Yes, as a matter of fact I did watch it. France did virtually all of the attacking, especially near the end of the match. According to the stats (you can look them up on the BBC) they had more shots on goal, more shots on target, had more possession and won more corners. England defended deep, and though their defence was solid, they did little decisive to counterattack after the excellent Beckham free kick that got them the goal. There wasn't any question mark over either penalty, either. Its funny how virtually all English supporters seemed to say that "England were all over France" when the stats obviously show the opposite was true.

France seemed flat at times but they still played better.
They were the better team and deserved the victory, although the commentators had already started to praise their, and I quote "10 heroes" near the end of the match. So take your accusations elsewhere, please. England were fairly beaten.

Watched the match with GadgetMaster - we were late and joined just before the first goal - 5 mins later and we would have missed it :-o

We seemed to have them on the run after that for the rest of the first half. Later, things seriously declined amd much as I hate to admit I kind of agree with Kenny. The second half was largely dissapointing - seemed England were playing defensively for most of it instead of making the most of the early lead.

Hoya!

OK, so France is supposed to be the best team in the World, right?

Well, maybe they won in 1998 but since, they have NOT been that brilliant.

Anyway, it is just sport, the best team, during the match, deserves to win. It just does not mean it is THE best team!

And... Don't worry bowler hats; the French are rubbbish at cricket ;-D

Be funky

Q. Where does Beckham get most of his goals?
A. Free kicks.

Are you saying that England are a bad team now? :-P

"People"? You mean Scots. Its the Scots who like it when England lose. And everyone knows that this is pure jealousy as Scotland has a poor football team. ;)

You run to the other wicket.  This counts as one.  The team with the biggest score wins :-)

Like baseball but without the diamond :-D

More like you English never shutting up about it when you win, gloating constantly. When will English commentators ever shut up about beating Germany 5-1, far less 1966? I mean, they NEVER shut up about it! EVER!

Watching you get beaten is immensely satisfying, because we know we'll be freed from yet another round of irritating boasting and gloating and rampant self-love. When it comes to football, everybody hates the English. They are bad losers, but they're even worse winners. :-P

I think this counts as racist KennyR, are we even now? :-)

PS - I think there may be someone in the world who cares less about football than I do.

"You English... ", I'm referring to.

I might have been a more interested football supporter if the stereotype wasn't so unbelievably childish (and worse things, hooliganism).  The day I decided I would end my even slight interest in football was when I was in secondary school.  I was told that I couldn't possibly support because I didn't have their latest kit and had never been to any of their matches.  The attitude was something I would have expected from kids ten years younger than the people in question, talking about Transformers or something.

I think the sad fact is that some 'men' need some way to vent their aggression in some neanderthal sort of way.  Perhaps these 'men' should work off their gut instead and GET OUT MORE?  Experience what the world has to offer, rather than their television?

Well, to be honest Mike, I don't care who wins the championship. It would be nice if it was the best team, but it has little impact on my life. However, the English (or should I really say, English media) would make things intolerable if England were to win. They just go on and on and on. Three hundred centuries from now the greatest moments in human history as described by the English media will be world peace, and end to hunger... and Geoff Hurst lifting the world cup in 1966. Except the first two wouldn't be shown on TV every day. :-P

But to be fair, there's no doubt the Italians or French or Germans or anyone else would do the same - it's just that I wouldn't have to listen to them harp on about it for the rest of eternity. :)

First sentence said by the English commentator after the German national anthem today:

"Oliver Khan looks pretty serious. Last time he looked like that in the German squad, England beat them 5-1 in Munich!"

WTF! That one wasn't even SUBTLE! How does that have ANYTHING to do with the match in hand! England aren't playing, and aren't even in this group! My equally subtle message to English commentators would be:

SHUT UP! WE DON'T WANT TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR STUPID ******* 5-1 WIN *YEARS* AGO OR ANYTHING ABOUT 1966! NOBODY CARES ANY MORE! :-x

Oh, I really can't wait until England get out of this championship, I really can't... Humility is such a satisfying thing to force on boastful people. :pissed:

You are such a *****! Even though I agree with you and I also hate football with a passion that knows no bounds, this is the one time that poeple who do care get a chance to celebrate...

Hoya!

Not sure.

There ARE a tiny number of people on this planet, like KennyR and myself, who DO hate this sport.

Honestly, whether or not France wins will NOT change my life.

I would be glad the day a French scientists team finds an HIV virus, not when France wins a cup or championship...

Anyway...

There is a difference between celebrating and never shutting the hell up. Bad winners are worse than bad losers. Imagine if someone won some game and kept talking about it every time this sport was mentioned, and even times it wasn't. For decades. You'd be a little pissed at them by then, no?

Quote

Maybe...once or twice. I wouldn't post ever week to say how great Scotland are, or pushing in a mention of Scotland's great victory whenever football, sport, or indeed spherical objects were mentioned for the next 50 years. If I do ever do this you have my sincerest permission to kill me.

I can just imagine it, a new planet discovered 20 years by now. "That moon looks like a football. Oh, this reminds me of the time when England won the world cup in 1966..."

This is all wild stereotyping and in fact racist rhetoric. You got a chip on your shoulder?

Come on, that's about as well-rounded as me saying "You Scots, with your porage-encrusted ginger beards, kilts, sporrens and tight-fists..."
How well-reasoned does that sound to you? To me its sounds bloody ridiculous. None of the Scots I ever met had porage in their beards ;-)

@Cyberus

Regardless, the vast majority Scots don't want England to win. Not for racist reasons. Not even because your fans disgrace Britain. Not because of the tabloid-lathered jingoism. Not even out of jealousy. One reason and one reason alone: England does not know how to win gracefully. And I generalise here because this pervades every part of your society. English people who come up here to work. The English media. English people on the internet. In fact, every single part of English society I can ever know. With one notable exception: people who don't care about football at all.

If England accepted victories gracefully and didn't try to rub them in all the time and exaggerate them so much, the Scots would undoubtedly support England. But they don't so we don't.
