TCP/IP over Parallel Port?
« on: December 21, 2003, 09:06:50 PM »
I've currently got my Amiga 1200 hooked into an old PC running PC2AM through a Laplink cable and it works fine.  It got me wondering though - is there such a thing as using the parallel port as a TCP/IP connection between the Amiga and the Windows box?  I'd love to route the Amiga through the Windows box and off to the net (without having to buy a PCMCIA Amiga nic card :))

If i  remember correctly the serial port can cope with 115k , er, which is pretty fast for an Internet connection...
What you need is PLIP support (IP over parallel) , for the pc side while AmiTCP will cope on the amiga side.
http://www.cloanto.com/kb/3-135.html
http://sruppert.dnsalias.net/amiga/magPLIP.html magPLIP.....

it will only be possible with PC printer ports that are ECp (  bidirectional).
try this on aminet:

http://wuarchive.wustl.edu/pub/aminet/info/www/dirs/aminet/comm/net/paradise.lha paradise.lha.

Basically you could program ANY port to output IP data.... :-D

good luck.

I just found:  http://members.nccw.net/fmacall/  which is a
PLIP driver for Windows 98 that's still being supported.  It works over a laplink cable (perfect!).  It's now just a matter of getting the Amiga TCP stack to see it.  How do you redirect the stack to look at a parallel port?

magplip37.8.lha is a  PLIP device driver for AmiTCP/IP...
Just have  a look for downloads with `plip` in their names, and download the device.... :-D

i`m not sure with amitcp but you could edit the :
amitcp:db/amitcp.config  file (?)

I've read that the wrong parallel connection with a PC can damage an Amiga but never bother with dtails. Currently using a fast serial port but I think a parallel connection would still be faster. What's the fastest parallel connection one can get using the built in Amiga parallel port? :-?

Yea i suspect the CIA chips deal with the ports and they do get fried if you fit a really old PC to the parallel port ( ie non bi directional)...

Don`t worry about that though... :-D
i remember that you could expect a theoretical  2 Mbytes/s from the parallel port.

i myself have a port jr. attached to the clock-port on my 1200 and that can go up to 230kb /sec (or so)

@blobrana

've checked the pinout and the Amiga supplies 5V on pin 14 (if I meanwhile didn't forgot). So plugging a Bidirectional cable might damage the PC side of things no? I 'd like someone to confirm this.

@ bloodmoney

Read THIS doc on Aminet.
Bumpy new year for u too. ;-)

I am using a standard pc serial cable(bidirectional I think) a null modem (phisical adapter) and a serial pin adaper from(something like 25 to 9 pin). With out any problems so far. I can tranfer files back and forth. I was to lazy to worry if it would kill any ports.
I still am looking for a pc hosted internet solution for my a500/1.3 system

It does, unless the PC can stand it, or you don't connect that pin, or you use an I/O extender that has a PC mode...

Whats the use of parallel ports these days outside of connecting old computers up with them anyhow...

So what's the bottom line guys? Is it possible?  :-?
No matter if it's serial or parallel connection...

Cheers...
