AEROS - AROS/Linux distro status update
« on: October 01, 2011, 09:47:30 PM »
Hi,

AresOne and friends will get a new standard OS.
Actually i plan to have it done for christmas.

There are only a few quirks left. Nothing dramatic.

Status update:
Offers the same as Broadway 0.6 plus the following Linux apps:

Abiword
Pitivi
Ooffice Impress (found no alternative)
Ooffice Draw (well it installed it as part of Impress)
Inkscape
Gnumeric
Gimp (Gimpshop is to outdated)
Blender 2.49b
Chomium Browser has been updated
Wine
PearPC 0.5 well just want to try it later : )

Linux parts are all updated.. experimenting with Wifi now.

After this i need to include Linux-Prefs into the AROS side.

EDIT: added Midnight Commander

Since the AresOne comes with AmigaForever it will allow to have the virtual Amiga running in coherency mode. (Thanks to janusUAE).

So you will be able to run Linux-, AROS-, AmigaOS 3.x-, Windows-apps and more at the same time.

I'm eager to see this released!

I'm really anxious to give this a test drive as well. I think its a really fantastic idea. Windows, linux, amiga 68k apps and AROS native apps all together. Thats like nerd overload!

Congrats and good luck with this! Looks really exciting so far.

No doubt, as much as it makes me cringe...

...I really like the idea of including WINE with this. If I could run all my DOOM Editing programs from an AROS interface, I'd be in 7th...

...no 8th heaven!

If Half-Life 2 ran, I'd be in 9th Heaven.

Windows compatibility aside, it would be nice to have those few key apps that work well in Linux, and I believe this would resolve a lot of driver limitations that AROS currently has.

Granted, it would be better if AROS just had WINE and more drivers and this and that, but hey, if I don't know I'm actually running on top of Linux, then I'm happy, and I think this will draw in a lot more users.

I agree if they can keep the linux side well out of the way so you forget all about it that would be best. No more driver problems is another great thing.

Its regrettable AROS dosn't have wine and more drivers natively, but it may never have wine native,so this sure fixes that and more. Actually, it fixes ALOT of problems I think prevents aros from becoming an everyday os.

I mean, if I had to I could get by with AROS native for most things I do, but I'd be alot more confident about saying that with this.

I love linux, but a sane file system and cleaner more efficient user interface  and simpler gui like aros has I would much prefer.

Not sure I like that boxy app launcher from Broadway, and the desktop icons seem huge, but I think thats just a few tweaks to fix. And that stuff is merely cosmetic. Getting the nuts and bolts of this to work is really impressive to me. I'd like to see how fast it boots and what it looks like booting... Like, can you totally hide all linux stuff and just have it go straight to aros workbench? Looks great so far!

If you need some graphics, or any other help, feel free to ask.

Good luck... Can't wait to try this!

Damn awesome. this way i can use aros also on my phenom with my xfi and my radeon 4890! aros native has not enough drivers for my big box computer. i already use ubuntu on it with wine and no windows. this way aros can replace even my loved ubuntu. good times to be an amigauser i think.can aros use the 4 cores of my phenom this way? cool sh*t!

What's the base distro?  Some kind of Debian/Ubuntu I presume.

I have been tinkering with linux for some time now. Lately, I've been spending my time getting dos apps, amiga apps, and windows apps to you know just point click and it runs... Its very cool. I know this can be done on linux very well, so I'm sure this kind of thing would work on aeros even better. (More sane sensible file system means you can find everything easier!)  This just opens more possibilities for that kind of thing, and I would much prefer the aros interface/gui to linux.

To me, if the computer I'm using can run linux, classic amiga apps, dos apps AND aros ng amiga apps... That would just be heaven.

ya know that Gateway saw the next Amiga as a Linux kernel but with a GUI that gave it the Amiga look and feel and old software running under emulation.  The users said"Yeccchhh".  Maybe Gateway was right.

Maybe the users were right. Seriously, this is cool and all, and I won't begrudge anybody their workarounds or effort-savers, but I just don't find it that interesting when what is ostensibly a distinct OS is actually just a user process on an entirely different and unrelated OS. And I especially don't get it when people act like this is a good end-goal, rather than just an acceptable workaround. (Points to AROS for at least having some native versions, though.)
Computers: Amiga 1200, DEC VAXStation 4000/60, DEC MicroPDP-11/73
Synthesizers: Roland JX-10/MT-32/D-10, Oberheim Matrix-6, Yamaha DX7/FB-01, Korg MS-20 Mini, Ensoniq Mirage/SQ-80, Sequential Circuits Prophet-600, Hohner String Performer

This is exactly what MorphOS (Quark microkernel) and Amithlon (Linux kernel) do.

If someone did the same with AROS but hosted on Haiku then I would use it.
