Title: Amiga 600HD hard drive pin missing
Post by: scuzzb494 on October 02, 2019, 07:40:48 PM
Hi

I have this Amiga 600HD and on the interface for the 2.5" internal hard drive one of the middle pins is missing. It hasn't broken off its a clean hole. Was there any chance that this was always the case. Can't see why.

Might be original, but uncommon. It is much easier to leave the pins on during manufacturing than to remove single ones.

See here, some pins are not used, try to identify the one that is missing on your connector.

Hi

Thanks for that. The pin is 34 as shown in this link to my website so doesn't appear to be doing anything.

The pin is not broken off and the hole is clear.

From your supplied photo it looks to me like some of the pins have been 'tinned' with a soldering iron.  So I reckon someone has had a go at it, and that's why a pin is missing.

Looks like drive activity LED, I assume that normally activates the a600 hd. Maybe the previous owner wanted to use the led for something else?

There's a couple of leaky caps there in the photo scuzzy too. I hope you've spotted them, one is quite bad.

Thanks for the responses.

I installed the 60GB hard drive and the drive light to the LED was working fine. There were no issues recognising the disk. The only problem was the time it took me to format the drive. In the end I kinda gave up with the process as it was just going to take too long. I have now put the drive in an A1200 which has the Quick Format option.  I also have an issue with the floppy drive which I have struggled to resolve and the keyboard connector is a little troublesome. The A600HD isn't one that I've ever used so I have no idea what state it was when it arrived here back in 2005'ish.

I don't think there was any issue with the pin in the end.

No need to low level format your hard drive. It will have it's own bad sector maintenance built in. Quick format will do the trick. In a shell "format dh0: ffs intl quick". You'll also want to partition it manually yourself first.

Hi

I never low level format I just needed the quick format which isn't an option from the drop down menu under 2.05. Anyway I fixed the problem by doing all the formatting on the A1200 and installed 2.05 there and simply moved the drive back to the A600HD and it is all working fine now.

And before you ask ' no ' ... I don't use CF cards. They are silent and
man do I hate that in a computer.
