Picture attachments not visible unless signed in
« on: August 03, 2019, 12:45:19 PM »
Picture attachments aren't visible at all unless you're signed in. I believe that you should be able to see at least a small preview of the attachment before signing in. I'm thinking particularly of potential new members of the site who may not bother signing up because the site doesn't show any pictures at all. Also though, a photo in a forum might be critical to offering the help needed and if the new potential member or existing member can't see the photo then they will not sign in or sign up to answer the question or offer the help.
I do believe this to be a fairly big issue. The little paperclip icon on the post gives no clear indication of what type of attachment is actually available - I don't understand why the attachments are treated in such a private manner anyway. Also, people using image searches on search engines will never be directed to Amiga.org will they?

Unfortunately, not going to happen. No site allows this generally and for good reason.
One of the main issues would be leeching.

I respectfully disagree with you here.  In my experience the normal forum behaviour is to display small thumbnails of the attachments so that you can at least get the gist of what has been attached to the post.
For example, see here:

https://forum.allaboutcircuits.com/threads/laser-diode-cw-driver.164040/

In contrast, this is how an amiga.org post with attachments looks (view it logged out):

https://forum.amiga.org/index.php?topic=74324

For images it's possible to work around this issue using third party hosting.   See one of my posts, here:

https://forum.amiga.org/index.php?topic=74245.msg844631#msg844631

The issue, of course, is that we are then reliant upon a third party for future readability of the forum message.  Personally I agree with Paul's suggestion that it should at least be possible to see thumbnails of the attachments, even if you have to be logged in to see the full size images.

I was talking generally, I was gong to look at small previews.

That first link you gave is mad, to me that is not a forum. That is a blog site, like wordpress.

Ah ok.  Then we are on the same wavelength.   ;D

It's definitely a forum, although I would agree that the layout is not something that amiga.org should aspire to.  It is also more than a forum as well - there is a blogging aspect to it in terms of electronics articles etc.  Still, it served a purpose in terms of showing how a typical forum handles attachment thumbnails with a login requirement to view in full frame.  I thought we were having a difference of opinion on this point, but it transpires that we are not.   :)

That was a quick test, still hand processing the last of 4000+ images, :(.
