Kickstarter for new book from David Pleasance
« on: July 02, 2020, 06:23:30 PM »
Since I haven't seen news of this here as yet, I thought it might be worth sharing: David Pleasance and Trevor Dickinson are working on a new book focused on the post-Commodore years.

As David describes it,
Quote
Starting from the day when Escom were the highest bidder at Commodore's  liquidator’s auction in New York (I was there), how their attempts to relaunch the Amiga spectacularly failed, then the troublesome years when our beloved computer bounced around from company to company, Viscorp, Quickpack, Gateway 2000, etc. and beyond.

This book leaves no stone unturned in revealing how the Commodore-Amiga assets became the target of a multiple of companies and individuals, some of whom were seemingly only interested in what they could gain out of it financially, and not even interested in supporting any of the many devotees who were trying to keep the dream alive.

In fact there was so much underhand and sometimes vicious activity with “Cease and Desist” orders and lawsuits aplenty (some still ongoing!) it was bringing a cloud over our erstwhile “happy go lucky” community.

However, all throughout this, what some people may call, “dark period” and almost in spite of it, there have been some genius individuals and legitimate companies who have produced and brought to market some of the most technologically advanced software and hardware ever seen.

This book exposes those companies and individuals who brought negativity and celebrates those who have against all odds prevailed and are now ensuring the Amiga not only “lives on”, but improves the potential to expand our community.

They are funding the project through a Kickstarter campaign, which ends July 19.

And soon there will be kickstarters for books covering that time in history when the number one thing all Amiga celebrities were doing, was to write books about each other and themselves... and we used to have socks and coupons and stuff.

Even the most ardent amiga fanatic has to wonder how much more we need to write about all of this. Wouldn’t a long article on a blog suffice? A book? For a forward looking and ahead of it’s time computer, there sure is a lot of looking back.

The chances of a book staying part of the history are far bigger than some random blog post on the internet as we know it by now...

What I don’t quite grasp is... why them? Neither of them were much involved, Pleasance lost to Petro and was pretty much gone for 20 years, and Trevor? Some, if not most, of us random “fans” have been following this drama ever since CBM died...

Please help making this project a reality by donating to the cause. The current funding trend is positive, but there's no reason to relax before the goal is met. Have a look at this graph, and let your friends and family know about the campaign (and have them tell others):

Karate, Jerry. Karate. It's the lifetime pursuit of balance and harmony.

Now that the book has been funded, there is a stretch goal for a longer-running version of the film, Viva Amiga.  With 3 days left in the Kickstarter, they have about 3,000 pounds UK to go.

With about 49 hours on the Kickstarter to go, the Viva Amiga stretch goal is about 1,812 pounds ($2,278) from being fulfilled!
