Intel 64bit CPU Delay

INTEL 64bit CPU delay

Intel had announced that they will delay the mass marketing of 64 bit CPU to 2008, because lack of market, lack of software (MS Windows), lack of memory.

Is this the chance for IBM / Motorola PPC or AMD to compete with INTEL in 64Bit market?
Will Amiga OS 4 support 64 bit CPU?

a 64bit amiga would be just what we need to get back on track and up to date. if os4 supports this i reckon it will be an excellent idea for eyetech to sell amigaones with these new cpus.

I think it's wise.. Intel's got the high-ground and the best price/performance ratio going for them right now... It's going to take a long time to get IA64 into the market... they better do it slowly...another earth-shaker screw  up like 'rambus' but worse...isnt what Intel needs.
I dont think clawhammer will ammount to much more then haveing the ability to use more memory because of the 64bit ALU... it's probably going to get beaten by old 32bit X86. I'm not scared of it

AMD may release the first 64-bit x86 CPU before Intel, but it doesn't necessarily mean it will be faster.  Intel have been trying to develop a decent 64-bit CPU for ages but haven't managed to produce anything viable from a business point of view.

Just like more MHz doesn't necessarily mean faster either :-)

Both AMD and Intel are bumbling in the 64bit world. Delays, lackluster performance, delays, more delays, etc.

Linus Torvalds also happens to work for a rival processor company "Transmeta"...

I think that this is a bad mistake by Intel - sure, 32-bits will be okay for 2003, and 2004 - but if AMD and Apple make the consumer want 64-bits (remember, it is about marketing, not about real performance!) then Intel will be stuck with a processor that is not desirable to the consumer.

Intel’s attitude doesn’t seem to be matching the days of 80286(16bit CPU)-to-80386(32bit CPU) (i.e. mid 80s) transition i.e. lacking the mainstream X86 32bit OS during this time period.

They have to compete with the other 64bit CPUs i.e. MIPS and SUN.

AMD’s advantage is the leveraging of the large X86 market for 64bit transition.

People has bought 16Mhz 80386 instead of 16Mhz 80286 while the Windows/DOS are in 16bit limitations.

I recall, Intel and AMD was not the first vendor of 32bit CPUs. We know what has happen to Motorola's 68k.

Delays,

Unexpected delays are not exclusive to AMD and Intel.

 lackluster performance,

Any benchmarks for that?
