Title: Need help installing Gunship.
Post by: rednova on April 22, 2019, 12:08:18 AM
Hi all:
I use an amiga 2000 (68000).
i just installed Pirates in the HD, and everything works.
I do not know if I got this right, but it seems when I installed Pirates
a new folder in the HD was created called' clip art temporary'.
i do not mind this (I know I should check it with Dopus-but is possible
the folder was there before, I just do not remember) but I am afraid
If I install gunship (original disk) into the HD, it might create an extra folder
called 'temp something' and mess up the settings of pirates. Pirates has
its own folder, and Gunship probably too, so the extra folder with a different name
might not have any consequence on ruining the games.
but as I am not good at this, I would like to ask for help.
Would it be possible to install 'gunship' in the HD, when Pirates is already installed,
without worrying something bad will happen ?
Thank you !!!

First, check when the new clipart folder was created. It might be nothing to do with the Pirates installation.

Next, if you are still unsure, make a copy of this folder so you can easily get it, and the contents, back.

I think the amiga has less risk of conflicting software than other platforms of the era. I've recently been installing a lot of additional apps and games on mine and they all tend to be self contained.

Why you don't use WHDLoad? That would solve all your problems.  I have several original Amiga floppy games and I'm 99% sure that my 30 years old floppy drives would destroy them immediately if I insert them to drive.

Hi:
I have good news. I checked both 'gunship' and 'clip art temp' folders, and the clip art temp folder was created
many years ago, so I am very sure now it has nothing to do with the 'pirates' folder.
I also checked the 'clip art temp' folder with DOPUS, and the folder only contains a single file called 'lhex'
that occupies a few Kbytes. I am almost sure this file is not useful at all, and it will not cause the Gunship
installation to fail. I am very sure now that I can install Gunship in the HD without any problems.
Thank you all for helping me .

Something funny happened. I was going to install Gunship today,
and found out the Gunship disk has not the option to install to HD,
it can only be played from disk. The game works and I can play it, but it has
to be loaded from disk. I really wanted to install it, but this is fine.
At least, i save extra space on the HD, and don't have to worry about the
installation failing. I know, i know, if I had WHDload I can install the game in the HD.
But this is OK, I am content to load the game off the original disk.
Thank you all !!!

When you insert the disk after Workbench has booted, does it let you browse the files on the disk? If so, then you might be able to manually install it by simply dragging the disk icon onto your hard drive somewhere and looking at the disks s:startup-sequence file to see which file needs to be loaded to load the game. If it needs any assigns you'll soon find out. It's more likely though that the disk will not show up in Workbench other than NDOS: or something, in which case WHDLoad shall come to your rescue should you desire.
