AMC258 Posts:877 | December 16, 2007, 02:13:20 AM Having more than one 1541 drive is about as useful as a RAM expansion. I had 4 of them for a while just because I always wanted to do that. *Almost* nothing actually supports disks in any drive that's not #8. Other than size/weight/magnetic field, what's better about the 1541-II? I never had one. I once wrote a set of programs that ran ON the 1541 drive. I could do all kinds of things with the C64 turned off. But, it was screwey because turning off the C64 would reset the drive and kill the program, so you had to unplug the cable first. GEOS came with the C64C I bought new way back when. So did Quantum Link. It must have came with other things too because everyone I knew had a GEOS disk, even the guys with D64's (original C64s, we called them Dinosaur 64's) and no one really used GEOS for anything. You know, building a RAID with 1541s would actually be really easy to do! A fun project for someday when I set up my C64 again. |
AJCopland Posts:910 | October 29, 2007, 12:41:25 PM If you linked four of them up together you could try to setup a 1541-MKII RAID(0) array simply because ... well I dunno actually but it'd be funny :-D |
hamtronix Posts:566 | October 06, 2007, 01:59:24 PM 1541 II was a sweet drive. |
rkauer Posts:3263 | April 24, 2007, 07:32:04 AM And more important: where did you find these treasure? In the ruins of Commodore's building? In some obscure deposit? On a secret Ebay auction? :-? |
justthatgood Posts:579 | April 09, 2007, 01:56:22 PM Woo hoo. Retro gaming stuff. |

redrumloa Posts:10126 | April 06, 2006, 01:07:12 PM @countzero I sold them all and made some 8bit C= users vey happy:-) I had buyers from all over the world, but the biggest buyers hands down were from Japan. |
countzero Posts:1938 | February 12, 2006, 02:09:37 PM wow, a treasure trove ! so what happened to all this stuff ? |

NoFastMem Posts:432 | November 04, 2003, 06:15:50 PM I wasn't a C64 dude, but how can you say that? Your hostility is too much for me, it makes me want to cry when I hear it :-( |

redrumloa Posts:10126 | September 09, 2003, 01:51:47 PM @Oldsmobile_Mike Yes the 1541-II has dip switches on the back making it very easy to switch between 8-12. |
Oldsmobile_Mike Posts:6105 | September 08, 2003, 03:04:20 AM Quote what would really be nice is to link 4 of those drives up to one c64, PURE LUXURY!! What a pain in the arse it was to change the device numbers in the origional 1541's, scraping off bits of solder... Didn't they improve upon that in later models? |

KennyR Posts:8081 | July 14, 2003, 04:44:03 AM I always wanted a 1541...in fact, I was saving up for one when I decided to buy my first Amiga instead. Oh well, I have no disk games for my C64 and it doesn't work that well now anyway. :-( |
mikeymike Posts:3413 | July 11, 2003, 10:23:54 PM Clustered C64s with 5.25" drive storage? Supercomputers will tremble. |
redrumloa Posts:10126 | June 18, 2003, 09:41:48 PM Quote I suspect you plan to sell them, eventually? If I told you, I would have to kill you;-) |
Quixote Posts:2059 | June 18, 2003, 02:46:50 AM ;-) Acually, that makes sense. I just noticed that in the picture on the 64C box, the monitor shows a window with icons in it. So the 64C, 1541-II drive, and GEOS were bundled together? Cool. I might be interested in getting a pair of these, in the boxes. I suspect you plan to sell them, eventually? |
redrumloa Posts:10126 | June 18, 2003, 01:39:13 AM @Quixote Goes was bundled with various hardware at times. I remember it being bundled with certain C64 promotions. These 1541-II definately have it bundled. |
Quixote Posts:2059 | June 18, 2003, 01:27:17 AM ;-) My own collection includes one of each of these. Except for the boxes, packaging, manuals, etc. :-? Also, I hadn't known that GEOS was included with the floppy drive, or was it? It's hard to read the sticker... |
Mike_Amiga Posts:1448 | June 18, 2003, 12:07:42 AM My C64 must have been molested by too many spiders in the attic cos it didn't work the last time I pulled it out, plugged it in and "press(ed) play on tape." :-( |
Vincent Posts:3895 | June 18, 2003, 12:00:09 AM Lucky bugger :-P I wouldn't mind one of them :-D |
