Title: Wordsworth 6 & 7 freeze up
Post by: Hiddenevil on January 11, 2021, 08:23:25 AM
Thought I’d post this here in hopes someone can help.

System
Amiga 500+
TF536
1Mb chip ram expansion with RTC clock (Amigakit)
8GB HD
WB 3.1.4.1

The issue:

Wordworth 6 & 7
Drawing shapes function

Over Christmas I was trying to make some Christmas present tags, I thought it would be an easy job. Draw a box, insert a field for FROM & TO. However I soon discovered I had one massive issue. Once I had drawn a box, I doubled clicked to bring up the properties. As soon as I click to change the colour, the screen locks up.

Additional info
Having made an image of my HD, I replicated my system in WinUAE and this freeze up also happens on an emulated setup.

Do you have any patches installed, like MCP, MultiCX, FBlit, FText...?

Checkout the Wordworth Woes thread. The solution there might also apply to you.

I’ve actually posted to that thread, but I didn’t want to hijack it. Besides my issue is different, as Ww works for me, until I try using the draw shape tool

I thought I should post an update

I have now figured out what was causing this freeze up, has taken me several weeks of messing about with WinUAE.

At first, I assumed it might be one of the following conflicting issues
Workbench 3.1.4.1
Terriblefire 536

I recently bought a Furia card for my A600, so HAD to setup a new Workbench 3.1 install anyway. I pretty much installed everything I had on my 3.1.4 WB A500+ on the Furia A600. Everything seemed to worked fine, none of the programs crashed, Wordworth 6 ran fine and WingCommander seems to actually run better on the A600 than it does on my TK536 500+. I've no idea why this is, but the intro for WC still slows on the Plus when there's a lot happening on screen, where as the 600 didn't break a sweat. Anyways i digress, back to the point. Wordsworth worked..so what the heck was going on?

I decided to setup / install a fresh copy of WB 3.1.4, I installed the update to 3.1.4.1 and then began installing programs. First off Wordworth 6, which worked, I could draw a box, bring up the properties and change the colour without it freezing. Next I installed MUI, WHDLoad, MiamiDX, 030 libraries and MMU functions to the startup sequence.

Wordsworth STILL worked, so the accelerator couldn't be the issue, neither could 3.1.4 as everything was working. At this point there wasn't much left to install, but i copied across the contents of my WBstartup folder, Noclick and a mouse cursor app called "SleepingPointers-cute". I then rebooted and tried running Wordworth 6, create a box, try to change the fill colour and wham, screen freezes and thats it. First thing to get disabled was the SleepingPointer app and surprise, surprise we are back in business.  Hours of mucking around, reinstalling OS's and it all comes down to a 20 year old cursor app.

What does the Sleepingpointer app do?

That's frustrating. Glad you were able to whittle it down to the offending app and get it sorted out though.

What does the Sleepingpointer app do?

App? We call them tools, programs, commodities, utils... :)

My guess - Sleepingpointer makes the "waiting" pointer an animated stop watch...

Or a "ZZZZ" cloud.

Best regards,
