I would also make a version which requires a CDROM so that the authentic music could also be played .

Why not.  I have seen dance mat games that generate tracks from cds.  Not as good as an actual hand generated track, but still possible

If he uses a PC he could hold keyboard "alt" and then on the numerical part of the keyboard type "255", that would leave one character which would consist of " " without the ".
