Here's an odd WinUAE thingy that has hit me
« on: January 16, 2007, 05:07:03 PM »
Fresh install of 3.9 on XP SP2, fully updated, virus checked, etc.
Problem: At any given random time during the execution of WinUAE, it will freeze - nothing works. If I hit F12 for the configuration screen then escape to exit the configuration screen, emulation picks right up where it left off until the next 'freeze'.

Also happens with Amikit :(

Tried changing multiple settings all to no avail.

Nothing running in the background, and nothing that wasn't there before when Amikit was first installed (which used to run fine, thank you)

Ideas?

What is your HW config? What version of WinUAE do you use? Try to install previous version if it worked before.

Humm, I had a similar problem to that as well, are you using an Intel based processor or are you using a Cyrix based processor.

I bought the Mini ITX mainboard by VIA with the onboard Eden processor (Cyrix based) and I could never get WinUAE to work on it without hanging and lots of pauses.

There used to be a Cyrix switch on WinUAE but I beleive it was eventually dropped and no longer supported.

I eventually had to do my WinUAE on another Intel based machine.

Other things that causes freezes for me are thing like SpySweeper by WebRoot and other programs that seize control of your system while they scan every single file that moves on your system which often causes weird pauses.

Does your system hang on any other applications or emulators?  That might be helpful in troubleshooting this out.

I hope some of this helps..

Does not freeze on anything else, but I haven't tried other emulators.

I don't think it's Amikit itself, as I did a direct install of OS33.9 and it does the same thing...

Will keep looking into it.

Anything else to consider?

Setup fresh OS3.9 system and try different versions of WinUAE. You can also try to turn off the JIT in CPU settings. It will slow down the emulation considerably though.

I`ve noticed that too, using the latest version.

Move the "CPU Idle" to the left, disable the sound emulation, tick "immediate blitter", and turn off the collision level.

@AmiKit
Regarding AmiKit 1.2.2, updated on-line till the latest 1.2.9:

I have problem launching SimpleMail, it won`t start (SnoopDos shows that the exe cannot be opened).

The pull-down menu appears when activated by right mouse click (touchpad), but as soon as I move the pointer it goes off!

Any ideas?

The only thing that comes into my mind is that the AmiKit 1.2.8 live update archive (the one with new SimpleMail 0.30 inside) was not downloaded completely and thus, when extracted, the SimpleMail exe become corrupted. It should not have happen again since I've added an integrity check some time ago.

Anyway, download the 1.2.8 update archive manually, extract it and copy the content to AmiKit.

Or simply download SimpleMail and copy it to AmiKit.

For more info please post on AmiKit Support Forum. Thanks.

Had probs with WinUAE on my Dual Xeon CPU PC, it hangs frequently...even with Amiga Forever
Seems like WinUAE doesn't like some "exotic" hardware sometimes  :-)

It appears I have fixed it...tried no jit - NO WAY, HOSE A...thought I was running a 1.5 mHz A500! Unbelievably slow!
What appears to be the fix is checking 'Force Settings' and only leaving Hard Flush unchecked...I swear I tried this..also checked 'More Accurate FPU' as well...and it seems to be working fine now!!!

Thanks for all the advice - again, great work Amikit and all it's contributors.
