Title: Games Choppy with Amikit
Post by: XDelusion on February 13, 2008, 04:50:04 PM
I've got a 2.4 Ghz AMD, and 512Mb or RAM. I installed Amikit and it runs like water, but the problem is that it seems that no matter what game I'm playing, be it something high end like Payback, or something old school like MYTH, the system seems to pause for a moment here and there making the game play feel slightly broken up and choppy.
If I boot Myth from a floppy I'm fine, but if it is loaded off hard drive it acts this way. Any ideas?

This is just strange. I'm using AmiKit's default settings, the latest WinUAE, everything is fine as far as MP3's and all that, runs pretty smoothe, but when ever I play a HD loaded game, it pauses every second or two, no matter how much I tweak the settings, reduce RAM, JIT, etc.

Nothing else in Windows acts this way.

The only thing I can think of that may be a problem is the lack of Ram  :-?

PCs are notorious for requiring more Ram than it states that is needed on the box  :rtfm:

Also what size pagefile have you got set on your PC harddrive? How much space have you got spare on your harddrive?

All these can affect the PCs performance  :boohoo:

I am surprised it works as well as it does, the underlying problem is windows which is a law unto itself.
I am running vista and it often pauses with kbd and mouse completely unresponsive until vista finishes doing whatever microsoft thought was more important than whatever I was doing, that is why I like the amiga, I am in control, not microsoft.

It just sounds like a typical PC to me :(

Nothing is as smooth as the good old Workbench these days.

How do I look up this pagefile information?
 Not sure what that is.

Can't wait till AROS and UAE are merged, that's all I gotta say! :)

Start->Control Panel->System->Advanced->Performance->Settings->Advanced->Virtual Memory (phew!)

A hell of a lot more complicated than the humble Amiga  8-)

How much space do you have left on your hardrive?

Could be a trip to PCWorld to get some extra Ram :-(

Turning that off did not help. My hard drive is nearly all free as I just installed Windows. I am not going to worry about extra RAM as I'm just fixing this for my ex girl friend and am not feeling it in my heart to help more than I need. :)
In the mean time I'll try to set up UAE on this Mac and see how all that goes.

Thankx for the help!

It's probably a RAM issue, yes. With WinXP SP2 512MB is barely enough to boot the system.

I kind of figured it a RAM issue, but then when some of the more recent Arcade titles were running smoothe in MAME, I was thinking I should in turn have enough for Amiga, but I guess not.
Oh well, when I have the money I'll put together another machine for a different OS.
