So, you can get it for free?

Looks like that’s what was agreed upon in January, but clearly not what has been communicated from the devs and their entourage.

On the other hand, after seeing quite a few videos on 3.2, I don’t see the appeal… I will just copy over a few bug fixed commands and new shell v47 (which hopefully fixes some annoying bugs) and let the rest be - too much pointless nonsense and cluttery.

And here I could start a long rant, but I will save that for later - one thing I will mention though - they have killed the Amiga tick - one can no longer tick off items in menus, as ticks are now replaced with dots (or boingballs?)

Not sure, what you are talking about. If you're refering to the 'checkmarks' in menus they are still there, maybe you have seen some theme-tweaking gone wrong or another distribution like AmiKit?

Oh, please do and don’t disappoint! The devs have been saving popcorn for weeks just for that special occasion.  8)

I don't know anything that's not in the news item, but that's not how I read this: "granting right to release" (i.e. commercial release) vs. "no objections" (free release).

Plus, Ben Hermans would have never agreed to something that would have taken all commercial value out of any further 3.x releases. It's not like he cares about the product...

The GUI does look quite a lot better, 1992's Gadtools just doesn't cut it anymore IMHO - although I'm wondering how useful that is if you're using it on 1992 computers for retro purposes. But I'm not the target audience anyway.

@kolla:

Menu checkmarks have nothing to do with the Amiga tick; any resemblance between them is coincidental. Checkmarks are used for togglable menu items, and dots (not boing balls :-D ) are used for mutually exclusive items, which is pretty standard on most OSes.

Quick note:
it seems that the serial-number is on the plastic wrap, so better keep the packaging or write it down somewhere. ;)

Not a problem atm, since:
apparently you can't register it

Menu checkmarks have nothing to do with the Amiga tick; any resemblance between them is coincidental.

That is simply not true, the paradigm here is a workbench, with drawers, tools, projects etc. and the notes hanging there with checkmarked items - that’s where the checkmark comes from in the first place.

Well, ironically, macOS holds the tortch and keeps using checkmark ticks everywhere without anyone complaining or getting confused. I don’t know what your list of OSes is, but I suspect it is rather limited. Again mimicking Windows.

On that topic, how is max size of windows now? Still limited by screensize, because… Windows?

I may just as well go on…

Workbench…
Wtf has been done to Windows menu? It looks crowded, but nothing is added or removed… just moved around, screwing around with muscle memory of users?
When is “open volume” needed as menu entry? The icon is right there on the workbench… (the only usecase I can think of is if volume is marked as “hidden” in workbench prefs, but then… I am almost betting on it not being available in the menu either.)
As someone who has been dynamically altering menus since workbench got an arexx port… dynamic menu entries are annoyingly slow… how is that list of volumes holding up with changes?

Does any of the possibly relevant menu entries relocate icons on Workbench to their original positions yet?

In IControl (Intuition prefs, really) it is still not possible to set a windows equivalent to the screen dragging hotkey… sad.

(time to go to bed)

The Open Volume menu item is handy when you want to open a volume but the screen is crowded with windows that you will need to move to get to the icons. It removes that pain. OS4 has it too and I personally find it handy to have.

Beyond Execute Command and About, there is not much muscle memory to worry about with the Workbench menu.

I second that. It is also handy when - as I do on my X1000 - you have 21 volumes visible on WB (out of my 93 total). Finding the right one in the submenu is often easier than hitting the right icon on the WB.

Best regards,

Niels

@kolla:

They are two different things: one is the menu equivalent of a checkbox, and the other is the menu equivalent of a radio button. So it makes sense to distinguish them, this is done not just by Windows but by OS4. There are plenty of bad interface designs in MacOS and no reason to blindly make the same mistakes. This is for Amigas not Macs.

It is possible now to register OS3.2 at hyperion-entertainment.com.
It still says 'disk version' for the moment.
The download versions are coming later:

Alternatively, you can wait until machine type specific versions of AmigaOS 3.2 will be offered as digital download once all orders for the AmigaOS 3.2 CD-ROM edition have been processed.
