Can I hook up music keyboard to amiga ?
« on: September 19, 2013, 09:16:52 PM »
Dear Friends:
I have an amiga 2000.
i am new to learning how to make music, using a nice keyboard.
I have original box 'deluxe music construction set' and it works on my amiga.
The manuals say is possible to use MIDI.
Can I hook up a music keyboard to my amiga and use with
deluxe music construction set ? And what do I need ?
Do I need a special keyboard ? what is a MIDI and/or MIDI equipment
and what do I need ? Where can I buy all equipment ?
Please help me !!!

Thank you !!!

You sure can! I've never used "deluxe music construction set" but if it supports MIDI then you can use it all. All you need is an Amiga MIDI adapter for your system which can generally be purchased off ebay for cheap, though I don't see any on sale currently.

With an Amiga 2000 you can use either an internal or an external MIDI interface.  Keep checking ebay & Amibay, and maybe post an ad in the "wanted" section.  If you're feeling more adventerous you can find instructions on the net to build your own interface.  Once you've got that you should be all set!  :)

If all you want to do is use the Amiga's own sound facilities, you can get plain old MIDI controller keyboards with no on-board sound quite cheaply - visit your local music store and you can probably get a velocity/aftertouch-sensitive 61-key keyboard for $50-70. Combine that with an Amiga serial-to-MIDI adapter and software, and you're good to go. Alternatively, you can keep an eye out on eBay or your local Craigslist for some neat old synthesizers and control them from the Amiga...but be warned, it's a money pit!

Don't forget midi cables...

Just for info:
the old Amiga midi adapters plugs into the serial port, then the midi cables (two)
plugs into the midi-in and the midi-out ports on the keyboard and midi adapter.

This setup allows signals to and from the computer and keyboard...
one of the older boxes were from ECE if I remember correctly.

For many years, my A2000 setup included an ECE MIDI adapter hooked up to Casio CZ101 keyboard synth.  I used it with EA Deluxe Music (both 1 and 2) to compose Music.  I used it mainly to add voices (4 Amiga internal plus 4 from the CZ101) - MIDI Out.  Deluxe Music could also take input from the CZ101's keyboard, though not in real time - MIDI In.

To do real time MIDI input to the Amiga, you would need a sequencer program like Bar's 'n Pipes.

Deluxe Music was a great music notational program.  Easy to learn and use.  It was the main thing I used my Amiga for.

@rednova

I have an external MIDI connection that connects to the serial port. I used it on my A500 long ago but don't use it now. I'll just check it and see if I still have the cables. If I still have it all I'll send it to you for the cost of postage/packing from Australia if you want it. I'll find out the cost if you are interested.

If you want to go really cheap, it's possible to make an output only MIDI interface using only one resistor, a DB25 plug and a 5 pin DIN plug. I used this years ago to hook up a cheap casio keyboard to my 1000 & 2000. I forget the exact hookup, but it's probably on Aminet.

Go here and get a schematic of a midi interface for an Amiga computer.
