Amiga Toaster Flyer SCSI drives
« on: February 03, 2013, 07:29:28 PM »
Hi,

I just bought a flyer and of course it needs 3 drives. I will be installing 3 internal SCSI drives.

What kind of termination do I need for the drives? Active or passive?

Does the flyer board provide termination?

Thanks!

If you've got short-ish cables you can usually get by with just the terminators on the drive.

If you run really long cables or multiple drives per chain, I'd get an active terminator.

The Flyer is terminated by default, so keep it on one end of the cable.

Just to make sure you know, you do want to use three separate cables, one per drive and controller.  3 on one controller isn't going to cut it.

I will be using 80 pin SCA scsi drive (since I have about 100 of these)

1 drive per cable. I will be using an SCA to 50 oin scsi converter.

So what do I need for termination?

SCA drives can't provide termination, so if the adapters don't either you'll need to get some cable terminators.

I am looking for the cable terminators now. Should they be active or passive? I sont know what the flyer is looking for

Thanks

I tended to get active terminators, just because I used long cables with external boxes and they were used to make my living so errors weren't really acceptable.

For home use with short cables, passive should be fine on those slow SCSI busses.  That's all you'd get from terminating the drive itself.
