eMac 1GHz support?
« on: November 05, 2010, 12:37:42 AM »
I see the 1.25GHz eMac is the only officially supported model, but has anyone attempted to run MorphOS on a 1GHz eMac?
It has ATI video, but only USB1.1 and PC133 SDRAM.

I can get one of these this weekend for cheap, but I only want it for MorphOS.

It almost certainly won't work, but bring along a MorphOS CD to test it in person to confirm.

Didn't nicholas just get MOS 2.6 installed on the same model of eMac recently?

Do you have any written info, or test results to support your opinion that it won't work?  I would have guessed the exact opposite, and thought I had read about someone actually getting it installed and working, but I can't find it now, so I might be mistaken.

To the original poster, do as Matt_H suggests and take a MorphOS2.6 installation CD with you to check out the condition of the eMac before you purchase it and test it out.  It does not take long to boot from the CD and see if the installation script begins.  If the seller does not mind losing the MacOS installation on the hard drive (many sellers wipe the hard drive anyway), ask him/her if you can install the MorphOS2.6 time limited demo version to the hard drive.  That way you will know for sure if MorphOS2.6 works on the 1.0GHz eMac before you make your purchase.

Good luck,

PowerMac4,4 isn't going to work, don't waste your time trying.

Nope, mines a 1.25GHz eMac (PowerMac 6,4).

It's an amazing beast to behold running MOS2.6 I must say! :)

I bet I could swap my unused 700mhz eMac for the 1.25ghz one serving as a kitchen computer with no one noticing...

Go for it, just swap hard drives too to be on the safe side. :)

Okay, I'll just wait for a good deal on the 1.25Ghz or 1.42Ghz model.
The 1Ghz eMac uses PC133 RAM and only supports USB1.1 anyway.

Dunno where you are from, but I just saw an 1.25 GHz eMac on ebay Germany, currently at 1 EUR: http://cgi.ebay.de/Apple-eMac-G4-17-Zoll-/320612464596?pt=Apple_Systeme&hash=item4aa5fdf7d4 (if I had more storage room I would conside a cheap bid myself, but storage is full...).

But I'd rather go for a PowerMac G4. They aren't that much more expensive than an eMac and you are free to attach a bigger display and you can - depending on funds and demand - upgrade the cpu up to 1.8 GHz. If funds are not too tight I recommend a Mac mini G4 1.5 GHz - I like mine very much. But the 1.5 GHz models are rare and usually go for 200+ EUR.

That makes it official.

I did not know that it had been confirmed NOT to work on the 1GHz eMac's.

@kedawa,

I am pretty sure the 1.42GHz eMac is not supported either, so get the 1.25GHz G4 eMac ONLY, or get a G4 PowerMac tower instead.  Many more models supported.

@ amigadave

The pattern I'm seeing from the MorphOS team is that if they don't explicitly state that it does work, it doesn't. :)

They said the 1.42GHz eMac is the "it might work, we haven't tested it" exception. Has anyone else gotten around to testing it since then?

I bought my eMac on ebay UK for £27 and my 733 MHz Quicksilver G4 Tower for £45.

Both of them are super fast too.
