A1200 and PPC cards
« on: December 11, 2002, 06:59:00 AM »
Is it possible to get a PPC board (any PPC board) into an Amiga 1200 without having to put it in a tower case?

There shouldn't be any physical problem fitting the card I beleive it
was designed with this possibility in mind.  However there may be
cooling problems, although leaving the trapdoor off and putting
plastic feet under the A1200 should solve this.
One thing I do know for certain is that the standard A1200 power
supply will not be able to cope, although if you have A500 PSU handy
that might.

It IS possible. I know of one machine with a Blizzard 060/603 and 128MB RAM in a desktop case. Instead of raising the machine to accomodate the airflow, the owner cut a rather large hole in his desk. Works a treat.
Cache Ya,

So, do you have any suggestions about what I should do about a power supply for this puppy?

You really do need a tower case.

I suppose you could get one of those external big PSUs that were popular for a while years ago (but very rare now)...but...

It's not just power, it's heat. A standard desktop just doesn't dissipate the heat well enough, and the PPC card will get crashy and might even eventually burn out. And then there's the space problem of adding a BVision gfx card later...
