Amigas and Widescreen 16:9 monitors for Workbench & rendering?
« on: December 03, 2009, 01:50:25 AM »
I have a couple of questions...both of which are sort of related and deal with using Amigas with widescreen (16:9) displays.

Is there any way to get an Amiga to PROPERLY display at 16:9 ratio...I don't mean merely stretching the image, but rather creating a proper custom screenmode that is truely 16:9 rather than 4:3 so that Workbench actually has more real-estate on either side?

This leads into my other question.  I am learning to use Lightwave and Aladdin4d (rendering software) and want to produce small renders and animations that are truely 16:9 in ratio.

Now...I know Aladdin4d will render to any Amiga screenmode you have installed....so if you had a true custom 16:9 screenmode, then you should be able to render true 16:9 animations for YouTube or DVD.

I want to avoid either stretching the image out from 4:3 to 16:9, or taking a 4:3 animation and cropping it to 16:9.  The latter would work, but it's a waste of rendering time and throws away valuable lines or horizontal resolution.

So...what are the solutions for 16:9 video on the classic Amiga?

712x400, NTSC HiRes Laced. How's that for aspect?

Ed: hence also 356x200, LoRes non-laced.

Those seem pretty close to the regular 640x400 and 320x200....so would they really be true 16:9?

To the poster above: I do have a graphics card (RTG).  I guess that's what I assumed was understood in my original post, but I guess I didn't make that clear.  So yes, I'm talking about creating a widescreen screenmode that is not dependent on the ECS or AGA native modes.

Okay, point taken.  Didn't realise it was that simple.  Never made custom screenmodes before.

I'll have to give one of these screenmodes a try.
