Amiga.org SETI@Home effort
« on: February 24, 2004, 02:23:11 PM »
Amiga.org, thanks to Dalamar, is now officially part of the SETI (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) effort.  While there is no Amiga version of the client yet, we're hoping that our team will both spark interest in the project, and possibly even lead to the development of client versions for the various Amiga compatibles.

If -- like most of us -- you have a "spare PC", Linux box, or Macintosh compatible lying about, please consider joining "Team Amiga.org SETI@Home".

Click here for the AO Team Page

Generic SETI Home page where you can read all about it.

Frankly?  Because we had apparently zero idea that the other team existed.  You REALLY ought to advertise more.

Yes, all ACTIVE Amiga teams should merge. It's sort of pointless to hope that we can have any effect on the lack of an Amiga client unless these groups merge. I count over 20 groups that can be found by typing in the term Amiga in the search field at the top of the (alphabetical) team list pages on the SETI@Home site.

There is a "typo":

Honestly speaking, I feel no impetus to join a generic "Amiga" team whose members I usually don't know and built-in politics that I don't know whether I support, whereas I very much support a team of Amiga.org members banning together for the same thing.

Kind of like bowling.  I have no desire to join a "league".  I don't know the people in a league, but if my friends asked me to join their "team" then I would gladly do so.

Not a typo, a "text field truncation".  Apparently Dalamar simply cut and pasted from the About Amiga.org page.

Yeah, the text was truncated.  I'll fix it.  :-(

I just wanted to make a team for this group.  It's not a competitive thing, just a friendly group.  I also didn't want to link to a company.  This is a club, not a company.  SETI@Home does make a distinction when you create the group.   :-)

Maybe you want a little bit of friendly competition with the existing Amiga SETI Team?

Not at all.  Why does everything in the Amiga community end up having to choose sides and competing?  There's no point in it.

Speaking semi-OT, I personally don't agree with the exclusionary ideal of the current "Amiga" team.  Amiga.org is the place for AmigaOS *and* compatible operating systems to include AmigaOnes running Linux, AROS, WinUAE, and even MorphOS.  We don't exist to solely support Amiga Inc as your team's description implies.

If you want to change the core description of your team to be a little less exclusionary, I'd be happy to talk with Dalamar about merging.

I don't see a linux RPM. Are there any? Preferably for X11 and not console?

"If you want to change the core description of your team to be a little less exclusionary, I'd be happy to talk with Dalamar about merging."

The group HammerD is in (and me also) was formed at least 2-3 years ago, I think. This was a little before most of the problems emerged at AI. I don't know where the guy who formed the group (aMIGA dUDE) comes down on all that has happend since then, but I think the description predates much of  the squabbling.

It might be better if we were all under one umbrella, however. If it would make it more palitable to folks like WH, a desciption that was broader or more generic would be okay with me (if it would allow more people to become active). Perhaps this is one place where the red, blue and black camps can agree (i.e. the need for an Amiga client for this ultracool scientific endeavor:)

@Red

I could've sworn I saw a PPC linux version in among all the i386 linux & unix versions. Go here:

@redrumloa

You install the console version for "UNIX" like systems and there is an Xwindows app that monitors progress for you.  The client itself is a shell app.  It's faster than the GUI version anyway.  :-)  They have binary versions for almost all linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, etc.  I personally use the Linux, Wintel, and Solaris versions right now.  It runs at the lowest priority so it wont interfere too much with higher level apps.

There an simple answer to this question.  Securty, people where sending back spoof reports that had completed an block of data.  Now I am not saying this is not happening now.  It just an lot harder to do.

But if there was RPM then there would be an lot easyer to make an client for Amiga platform.
