See AmigaOS4 in action

See AmigaOS4 in action on video.

If you don't have quicktime6 the .mp4 files are the ones most likely to work. If your browser can't handle that page you might try this one instead.

This is AmigaOS4 running on the 933MHz G4 AmigaONE. Speed will be better in a short time then some stuff is replaced with native/JIT-emulated code.

No joy here with .mov or .mp4 files.

I have Riva & Frogger has always crashed on me. Is there any chance of a 'simple' *.mpeg file that Riva can run?

Both Frogger and MPlayer worked just fine .. I downloaded the .mp4 files.

[Rant]

Wouldn't it be good if people used TFT monitors rather than CRT ones when filming. The flicker is really annoying.

[Rant End]

I don't think OS4 has been demonstrated in the UK yet, what have we done to deserve that ? :-?

just using a camera with adjustable shutter time would do also...  :-)

In the movies AmigaOS4 runs on the 933MHz G4 AmigaONE.

I thought OS4 still was not ready to boot on AmigaONE yet?
Maybe someone from hyperion can verify if this is indeed an AmigaONE running os4? that would be great news..

One word:   SLOW!

Longer explaination:  I've got a 68k Amiga that can outperform what I saw on those clips.

Really, that CAN'T be an AmigaONE running OS4.  It's just way too slow.  I suspect it's a Cyberstorm, and the news was just transcribed wrong.  (Well, I hope anyway.  If not, then it shows that Hyperion has a LOT of work to do...)

@DaveC

If you read the page these movies are on, it explains that the graphics libraries were all running under 'non-JIT emulation' at that point - ie. they were 68k code running on PPC quite inefficiently.

Still too slow.  I would imagine that the graphics hardware would have more impact on actual performance than the renderer.  I remember using QNX with the ultra-slow "flat mode" VGA driver, and it still blew away those movies.

But then, this is why people are loathe to show off incomplete software.  Hopefully a more complete version, with full hardware acceleration, will be demonstrated soon.

I don't understand the point of the GUI responsiveness movie.  Responsiveness is technically the computer's ability to keep the user informed of exacty what is going on and how long it will take.  To do that, you really have to have closer shots so we can actually read what's on the screen *hint hint*   :-D

Again, I think it's way too slow, particularly at the advertised clock speed.  On the plus side, it's much better than the screenshots ;-)

Maybe we should write a Screengrab do's and don'ts list.

E.g

Do
Get close to the screen or use the zoom.
Show detail so that the computer screen is more than 100% of the viewing area.
Use a tripod or a stable rest for the camera.
Explain the point of the shooting before hand to any ####istant.
Rehearse 1 time.
Post in a format the audience can access.

Don't
have the computer screen  < 100% of the viewing area.
Shake the camera.
Show bright lights in the background or use a flash.
Shoot from the back of a crowd.

Any more?

Valan

The gfx drivers isnt ported yet to ppc, so no wonder why it is still slow.  :-P

I am pretty sure it will fly, once it is finished..

I don't think slowness will be any kind of issue going forward.  I'm no Amiga or Hyperion apologist, as you all know...but this isn't going to be the issue.

This was a milestone...years late in my opinion, but nevertheless the milestone of booting on an AmigaONE, and the milestone of some kind of petunia integration.

This isn't time to judge the speed...now making a judgement about why its not yet, in 2003 ...time to judge a finalized product...is a valid criticism...but the speed just means this is unfinished...by the time its finished, if ever...it will be fast enough.

Of course a G4/933 is going to run an operating system so lightweight and lacking in features as OS 4.

I have full confidence it will run plenty fast.

Yeah, i find it amazing that people complain about no screenshots, video and so on... When a screenshot or video of the OS finally arrives, they complain either about colors, being slow and so on... Its a unfinished product, what can you expect?

This is a big step forward...
