Title: Should I pick this mac mini up?
Post by: TheMagicM on July 10, 2009, 08:50:48 PM
its in great condition.. $125.  no kb/mouse.  1.2ghz g4, 256mg ram, 40gig hd.   it'll be another MorphOS box.   upgrade to 1gig ram.   should be quick enuff for 2.3, right?

Quick enough for 2.3 what? a larger hdd might be nice too, price seems fair though.

Seems like a good deal to me, I'm sure it will be plenty fast enough.  Have they even announced a release date yet?

That's a steal as far as Amiga hardware goes. And if you get tired of waiting, there's a fairly capable OS from Apple that you can run on it :)

Go for it.

Ok, I was not aware that mini support had been announced for the 2.3 release. :)

I was under the impression the next release was going to support the Mac Mini.   I'm confused as hell I guess.  Dunno if its 2.3 or if the next release will be 3.0... dunno.

Just make sure you can upgrade to 1G and consider the cost.  My Mac Mini is said officially (by local Apple support) not to support 1G RAM.  I mean you can upgrade but as long as you can find the proper memory and DIY.  Dunno these days but the said RAM spec might be hard to find.

But hell, it's possible.  Just keep in mind the fact you can pay some extra for the RAM - and double check if it might be 1G indeed.

I would say wait... the PPC macs are only going to get cheaper... They are pretty reliable... just wait until MOS is actually released and you might pick one up for $20 at your local junk shop!

You must have a special mini then, other people can have a look here (http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Device/Mac_Mini_(PowerPC)) for some upgrade guides. PC3200 RAM should still be fairly easy to find...

Hmm not sure that your price prediction and location availability is exactly accurate, that is if eBay is any indication of supply and demand.

I agree with firedawg.  I don't think PPC minis are going to be in junk shops any time soon.  I've spent some time monitoring prices on ebay and even non or partially functional minis have been going for more money than the one TheMagicM is considering.  So snap it up! :-)

Prices have been falling... if they have stabilised then they will stay stable, by the time MOS is released for the MacMini (probably not any time soon), they will either be the same price or less... the PPC MacMini is not going to increase in price...

@Bloodline

Well no...they're not likey to go up I agree, unless something very odd happens.  Still the price of this mini seems reasonable at the moment whether it would in six months time is anyone's guess.

All ppc minis can take up to 1gb of ram. It can take also ddr 400 sticks, but these will run at 333 rate.
Go for it, its a good price.

My ppc macmini have 1gb instaled by myself, its easy to open and people said that speed up the osx but i see osx a bit slow, maybe the 4200rpm hd is part of this colorfull circle on the mouse pointer, morphos can make a better use of this hardware than osx.

Any news about this morphos release please!

About the price of this macmini i think its good, cheaper than a MOS license.
