Title: Back from Amiwest, fun was had.
Post by: redrumloa on July 30, 2003, 02:30:39 PM
Back in Florida, can't type much atm since I need to catch up on my auctions. I will put up a few pics later today, not too many though since my digital camera seems to do a poor job in poor light situations.

I may do a mini show report, though there's not a ton to report that you probably don't already know since I see the banquets and speaches are transcripted already.

A few points of interest.
There were a couple rumors I heard of fricition between camps but I didn't see it therefore I won't report it:-D

Ben Herman and Bill Buck sat side by side for the banquet Q&A without a fight breaking out;-)

I purchased Hyperion's Quake II, Freespace and PageStream4.1 at the show. i also picked up a copy of the Super Bundle so I am very anxious to get things done today so I can start playing with the Peggy.

I met a few more AO users. I must say everyone I spoke with seemed like genuinely nice people. I'd like to thank the show organisers and everyone I met for making it an enjoyable time:-)

Welcome back.  Glad you had a good time.  Wish I would have been able to go.  Maybe next year.

Tell us the content of the superbundle? :)

Mind you it's supposed to be up for people to download it though. :P

Wait a minute!

Genesi USA is now a ranking?!?! :-)

Just kidding. Great news there, Wayne. I was listening to the mp3 of the announcement while I was burning the 5 CD set of the mp3's from the show. :-D

Nyah Nyah, I still have the WebMaster ranking :-P Although, "Mouth of the South" would probably be more fitting

Uh, doesn't this "Genesi USA" rank idea seem like a big mistake? The ranks are supposed to be (i.e., locigally) based on number of posts, with exceptions being moderators and webmaster -- in other words, rolls connected directly to the forums. It doesn't seem smart to create ranks that not only have nothing to do with the forums, but in fact cause people to question the neutrality of posts, moderation, news posting, etc.  In particular, a rank that's a corporate name, particularly the name of the site host and one of its sponsors, and one often involved in heated discussions directly or through staff or customers, seems really wrong-headed to me.

I think your signature is a more appropriate place for corporate affiliation, if that's something you want to draw attention to.

Of course it's up to you guys to decide these things, but I don't see any upside, and a bunch of possible negatives, in appearance if not in fact.

Gary_c what you're saying makes sense...even
though I like Genesi as a company, this is
definately not the best way to maintain a
"moderate" approach to the site.

I'd like to have "Ultramarines 1st Company". Please? :-)

Nevertheless I think Gary C hits the spot - after that you'd have to create Amiga Inc, Hyperion, whatever ranks too.

Sticking to the old system is more reliable imho.

Yeah, I have to agree... a corperate Rank is not good.

As I would demand an "AROS Saviour of the Free Thinkers" Rank... and that's not good for relations :-D

Nah, I'm most happy with my "Cult Member" Status... Hell, I even have a new avitar to celibrate!!!

Actually Amiga Inc already has a ranking and has for a long time now. I don't see the problem myself.

@gary_c

Actually, my thoughts when creating the special ranks (there are also Amiga Inc, Hyperion, and other "ranks") were essentially two-fold, both of which have worked very well.

1) It lets people know that some people have a specific affiliation so that there is no questioning their motives or "hidden agenda".  Some people were also unaware of who specific people are in real life.  This is simply a little flag.

2) My intention, which has worked is that it HAS cut down on the trolling on both sides by people with those special ranks, since they now feel more appropriately "weighted" to maintain a professional attitude.  I can only speak for myself, but I've noted it in others as well that I'm less inclined to call someone a "****head" when my company name is attached to my post.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention, AO is not the only site with special company rankings now. The other xoops based site is also doing it.

I see your point,  but I still think the signature is the place for company or organization affiliations and other such identifying info. Maybe I'm too rigid, but I think the rank designation should stay forum-related, either number of posts or moderator, etc.

I guess I'm just accustomed to seeing signatures with ID things in them; having a company name as a rank seems like it interferes with the forum system (maybe kind of an anal response   ;-) ), and could be interpreted not as "he's responsible because he's representing the company," but as "he's using his company name to give himself more weight" in these discussions. Just my general reaction, and nothing against you guys, of course, whom I have great respect for personally  :-) .

(Also, it doesn't surprise me that the other XOOP site uses company labels, something almost expected, but not necessarily a good thing.)
