Fix a bowed GVP A530 case with a 3D printer and Tolkien
« on: May 06, 2021, 04:50:30 PM »
My A530 case was bowed from years of use and heat from the components inside.  I have seen many other GVP cases online with the same problems.

I flattened the case by laying it upside down on the bed of my 3D printer.  I then placed some weight on the inside of the case and started warming the bed.  I slowly brought the bed up to 100C and left it there for about a half hour.  At that point I slowly cooled the bed for another half hour.  I didn't take a before picture but the after shot is attached.

A couple of notes.  Make sure the bed is clean.  Like really clean.  I somehow got a small dog hair pressed into the case.  Be careful with the heat and time.  I think I pushed it about as far as I could.  There are a couple of small shiny areas where the texture is gone.

It cost GVP a lot to setup the injection moulding for those cases.

I understand they had about 4 million in investor funding. Quite an advantage at the time

Anyway, nice job. I'd have gone for about 110 myself. Just to make sure. :)

EDIT: And because my work area is chilly.

Imaginative combination of elven magic and a hot plate.
Seem there's always pet hair involved in all of my projects too.  :P

Tonight I replaced the old 40x20mm fan with a 40x10 Noctua fan and partially reinstalled the case.  Quiet and cool.
