Am I insane? Perhaps. Has anyone tried anything like this before?

Simple Network Management Protocol, i.e. SNMP. It's how stuff gets remotely managed in the rest of the universe (unless you're using windows which also has WMI).

My main reason for asking is I'm using Spiceworks, both here at home (Amiga/Peg/Efika) and at work (Efika), and anything that isn't windows, mac, or *nix based shows up (the IP is detected) but is 'blank'; no information can be retrieved.

I expect Cloanto has done something along these lines with Amiga Explorer.
