re: "contributions drawer"

i have the pleasure of owning Suse linux 8.0 , wether or not you think linux or this version is good or bad the whole distribution comes on 7 CDs AND 1 DVD ... the suse linux "contributions" drawer is MASSIVE with OpenOffice and StarOffice both in there as well as a plethora of games, paint tools, editors, compilers etc etc etc. the install interface is, however a lot bad and it's hard to find everything you need but hell... it's MASSIVE and i was waiting for this to happen so i could start weening myself off of windows...

the NG amiga NEEDS a similarly massive selection of goodies in its "contributions drawer" if anyone's going to use it out of the box....

obviously i need an amiga one ASAP so we can get porting openoffice to it :-)

Yeah, I was wondering why the AW staff pick question 10 or 2. Having both just wasted a question.

I started with SuSE 5.2. Trust me when I tell you to get rid of it and install debian.

Well Wayne didn't want this as "news" and he rules supreme.

Yup, and so far we havnt even moved this to 'Talk About' which would be the appropriate forum because I know it would ruffle some feathers. :-P

Fleecy? AmigaOS Development?  :roflmao:

Honestly, it should go into the "Ainc/partner" category, but
since that has been removed and there is no
"Announcments/updates/official statements" category
(which is normally OK, since that would usually go as
"News"... but as mentioned, we are not allowed to post this
as News ...!), AOS development comes closer. "Talk
About" is (as far as I understand it) for general chit-chat and
these days mostly for non-Amiga issus. No matter what
you think of the Q&A, you cannot begin to claim they are
not "Amiga related" at least ...

Since you have chosen to ban "repeating news items" in the
News section, perhaps you should provide such a category
(for all kinds of official but non news-worthy announcments)
in the forums instead? That's where Wayne said he wanted
this information after all. Why not categorize it properly
too?

(... or alternatively let people decide for themselves what
Amiga-related tidbits they think are "news" or not. But that's
just me.)

@SlimJim

Amiga.org has some greviances with Amiga Inc and Mike Bouma ( who is closely affiliated with this Q+A according to Mike Bouma ) and it would be only human for this to spill over into decategorisation and deemphasising for the offending parties. I expect this to be denied as a reason btw but its what I think. I don't want to judge the greviances myself!

Id like to see the category you speak of in the mainline forums because people abuse the existing categories to put something that is Amiga related, doesn't fit into the categories but that they want to go up onto the main page.

Hate figure.

@SlimJim,

Press releases are not usually reported verbatim as news....

Sometimes a reporter will do an interview as news, but its that news site, that owns the interview, not another.  If something truly news worthy comes out of that interview, than any network or news source would carry that bit of news...but not the whole interview.  The whole interview would still belong to the source that generated it.

All of this is common knowledge.

The more important point to address is the idea that Wayne's ownership implies that the rules serve Wayne.  Wrong...the rules serve the community.

We don't want press releases being reported as news, because we'd rather have only verified facts to be reported as news, in light of history, were press released were reported as news from various sources, from Merlancia, Amiga, Inc., Phase 5, Amiga, Inc., and oh yes...lest I forget, even our favorite company Amiga, Inc.

we have gotten burned many times by believing press releases, and its the community, not Wayne, demanding some quality standards about what is reported as news.

Well I'm not Wayne, but this is how I understood it.

Post the whole Q&A and it might be news (but AW don't like that).

Post a summary on what fleecy said and it might be news (and
I would even argue for posting it as that).

Post a summary about what was talked about (without the real
answers), and it lands in the forums. That is what you did.

Post just a link, get deleted.

Just post "it is sunday", which is bascilly what The_Editor did
on ann.lu and get deleted AFAP.

And YES I think those rules are o.k. and should be applied to all
sides and sites.
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

@Slimjim

My saying it should be in Talk About was based on a personal opinion and was mostly meant in jest.

As for adding forums? That's up to Wayne but it's doubtful you will see it happen. Wayne just eliminated a bunch of forums and he wants to keep the number of forums to a minimum.

I don't think it's so much not news as how it's a repeatable issue,
more akin to Andy Rooney's Editorial every week at the end of 60
minutes.  Nothing new is discussed in the Q&A's, no new information
arrives, just Fleecy's feelings and viewpoint on the world.

Now, if it was a Fleecy dissects the computer industry every week,
with each week him dissecting a particular segment of the industry in
a reporting style, bringing forwards facts, going through the
research, and presenting these facts in an entertaining and
informative format, it would be top story every week.  But, this is
not happening, it's a simple Q&A session.  it is a common event,
occuring every week.  No more news than the Presidents weekly radio
address to the nation.  News articles comment from the presidents
address, and I'm surprised nobody has made amiga news articles that
reference information given in Fleecy's Q&A.

For everyone involved see ann.lu, with "[News] Fleecy addresses promotional Amiga OS4 rebate handling".

That's it. Fleecy's regular Q/A in itself is not really a news item. If there is anything newsworthy in the answers, post it as news. Until then... It's forum level IMHO

That was a very poor motivation, in light of old and present
news postings. But I see you overall point ... I think. Just please stop using
pluralis majestatis when you state your personal opinion.
There is no "we" wanting things, only "you" when you state
a personal opinion.

I rather accept the "no regularily repeated news item"
criterion. Fair enough. If it's not "News" it isn't. As Kronos
listed, it belongs in the forums according to this. But some
sort of category to handle these "announcments/official
statements that are not newsworthy" would still be the
best solution in my very humble opinion.

@redrumloa

I know you were jesting. But your post raised an
interesting point.
