Title: New AOS Reference docs?!
Post by: pjhutch on June 28, 2003, 03:55:16 PM
How many people would be interested in developing new reference documentation on AmigaOS?

RKRM is ok as a reference but its a little dry and lacks any decent example code. Example code helps a lot when understanding APIs.

If you like I might start with Intuition, Graphics, Gadtools and Reaction.

Far from everything, but its a start. And yep.

Plus we are also going to serialise prerequisite knowledge in Total Amiga Magazine, if my writing skills are up to it.

If someone is already on it then there isn`t much point me doing it? There are no books or PDFs available anymore on Amiga stuff.

What subject areas are people interested it?
Workbench/AmigaOS, Programming, Harware, Software?

Having it in PDF format may make more economic sense as its a widely used format and people can print it if they wanted.

Competition is great. Never ever said otherwise.

Sometimes readers click with one author and not another, the important point is information gets across to those that need it.

Couldn't agree more.  It's a shame that it's near impossible to buy a full set of RKRM's now.  They are bloody good books.  Best technical reference manuals I've ever read.

id like to help :-)

AmigaOS does need a good up to date reference that is compareable to RKRM's

probably Intuition, and IDCMP msg handling - user interface stuff

start from the more essential things and work your way out
...you might find that the last thing you focus on is layers.library perhaps :-P

Thanks for comments guys.

BTW, What format would you prefer?
Amigaguide, HTML or PDF. The last 2 are my preferences.

I think there are programas to convert HTML code to AmigaGuide... I think that it should be made in HTML and later converted to PDF and AmigaGuide...

I have an original set oF RKMs (except the hardware guide). They are still very interesting. Though they're of not much use to me nowadays.
Anyway, Amiga has to grow considerably, until we get something like this.

.PDF is a must
and a series of text files would also be good, since they will work with any (electronic)computer
