Will this SCSI CD work with an A1200?
« on: January 15, 2005, 03:59:33 AM »
Hi -

I have not been able to get this SCSI CD-RW to
work on my Amiga 1200 yet.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5152640811

Is this unit perhaps just not compatible with an Amiga?
My SCSItool Box shows it as a Yamaha CD drive.  I get close but working with the CD0 Mountlist in DEV/DOSdrivers
I just can not get it to mount !

This evening I loaded AmiCD (from Aminet) and it still won't mount.

I had a problem similar to that, with my A2000. Here's what I eventually did, it MIGHT work for you, maybe not. For some reason, my Amiga would hang on boot up, if the CD drive was already on. And, if the CD drive was off, of course, it could not be mounted. If I turned the CD drive on after having booted the Amiga, and issued the mount command, it would say the drive was mounted, but I couldn't access it, either from the WB screen, or the command line. Here's what I eventually did: First boot the Amiga, then, when its completely finished the boot cycle, boot the CD. Then, do CTRL-Amiga-Amiga (or CTRL-Commodore-Amiga), for a soft reboot, while the CD drive is still powered up. Then, try to install AmiCDFS, and mount the CD drive. That worked for me. But, I still have to do a soft reboot of my Amiga after the CD drive has been powered up, every single time. Never did take the time to figure that one out, or why it works, but it does, for me, at least. One final thing: Double check your mount file, to see if its properly configured. Used the example mount file in the AmiCDFS docs as a guide.

It should work, what SCSI controller are you using?
Are you sure termination is correct?
I have a Plextor 40tsi and a 121032S burner hooked up and they work fine.

Hi -

I have a GVP 1230 accelerator card with 4 meg RAM, and then the little 1291 SCSI adapter card that piggybacks on that.
Recently I downloaded new drivers (from my PC)for the GVP cards that I will try to update.

I have had success attaching a SCSI+ SIP drive to the system, but not getting it mounted to read a PC disk.  Sooooo frustrating.

I must be an Amiga retard with mount lists, etc.  I just can't get these things to work !

The 1230 should work with a SCSI cd-rom drive (even a CDRW) but GVP's are really iffy when it comes to termination.
You have attached the drive with a DB25-50Centronics cable? The other centronics connection on the CDRW does that have a Termination Block? If not that will probably be the problem...

If you don't have a terminator you can try the following:
Open up the drive and take out the drive itself. Look at the back and between the audio connector and the SCSI connector there is a row of jumperpositions. Place a jumper on the second position from the right (termination). The rightmost position is block size (don't mess with that yet), the next one is termination. Hook everything back up and try it now.
If you do use this option remember that from that moment on this device has to be the last in the chain; ie you cannot connect anything on the back port of the drive unless you remove the jumper again!
The manual for the drive is found here:

Good Luck!

For the A1230 and 1291 scsi you have to place the GVPscsi.device into sys:expansion for it to work!

you can get the latest GVPscsi.device driver from http://www.gvp-m.com/updatejapan.html

The gvp 1291 scsi card looks for the AmigaOS device driver in sys:expansion for any connected devices.

Az
Completely useless? I can always be used as a bad example

No, gvpscsi.device is in ROM on those cards; otherwise you would not be able to boot from SCSI hard drives.
You can use the updated gvpscsi.device but then you have to disable the ROM version (J6 on the A1230)

Here is the snippet from GVP:
Version 5.3 of GVPSCSI.DEVICE This is version 5.3 of the GVPSCSI.DEVICE driver for the A1200 SCSI-RAM+ and the Performance Series A1230-Turbo+ with A1291 SCSI kit. It makes adjustments for the NEC CDR-38 and NEC CDR-25 CD-ROM drives. You will need to change a jumper on the board (J4 for A1208 and J6 for A1230) for this to work. With the SCSI portion of the ROM disabled, you will not be able to boot off a SCSI drive, but this version is not needed unless you have one of these CD_ROMS. Included is a corresponding version of GVPSCSICTRL.

That's correct; the gvpscsi.device is in ROM, on the controller card. There are some circumstances where you would want to swap that one out, usually for an updated version, but, if you disable it by jumper, you won't be able to boot from your HD. After I got my CD to work, I had an issue with playing music CDs. The cause of the problem turned out to be the gvpscsi.device driver in ROM, and the only way around it was to download a later version, disable the ROM version, and call it from a floppy startup. I didn't think it was worth all the trouble and inconvenience to do any of this, so I found other ways to play my CD. Your problem may be caused by terminator issues. I finally had to stop using my terminator plug, as it made the drive completely unmountable, and caused the worst, most abrupt system crashes. Maybe you should try not using it. (Also, check your SCSI device number for the drive, and make sure it matches the number in the mount file. I heard somewhere that GVP cards are partial to the #2, for the SCSI CD drives.)
