Updating Workbench 3.1
« on: March 27, 2020, 11:21:58 PM »
Hi,

I am using workbench 3.1 and I would like to update it with some more colours, change of icons and a desktop background. At the moment I am using the standard icons and colour scheme

I have a commodore 1084s monitor. Is this something that can be achieved with this monitor? I understand it wouldn't look as good as a on a modern monitor.

Regards

Regarding colours you can probably go as high as 64 colours, before the system heavily slows down because you don't have a graphics card, obviously.

You will need a modern icon set, maybe alternative icon.library from Aminet.

For the background you should make up your mind finally for resolution and colours, and then scale (down) your wallpaper to that resolution and save it as an IFF. Do not attempt to just choose a jpeg for your background, the delay it takes the Workbench to scale it down will drive you nuts.
Use PPaint for instance instead.

Of course, with an o30 turbocard you should think about getting Kick3.1.4 and assorted disks, but there are monetary units involved going this way. ;)
Edit: 1221EC is an o20 i guess?

This is quite an extensive topic, there are things like FBlit, ChipRAM usage and so on. A quick answer is therefore impossible.
If you are willing to throw money, imagination is the limit.

Hi there sturulez...  Have you ever checked out Better Workbench? I was never too keen on these enhancement packages however, after doing some hardware upgrades to the A500 in my sig, I thought I would give BetterWB a try. I found it quit awesome! You can switch from the boring 3.1 icons to the newer glow icon set which is quit appealing to the eye. Not sure if it has a background utility. And it comes with a ton of enhancements and utilities that are very useful. Mostly the stuff you would spend a lot of time hunting down individually. It's also still maintained. It would look really good on an 1084S monitor too. You certainly have the horsepower to run it. Maybe give a try...   ;)

Just install PeterK’s excellent IconLib 46.4 and use whatever icons you want (I prefer old «NewIcons» myself)
Be aware that more colours (more bitplanes) also means slower screen updates etc, and that everything fancy eats RAM :)

If your Amiga is A1200, CD32 or A4000, which all have AGA, you may want to use a 16 colour (4 bit planes) interlaced mode and MagicTV. And also FBlit (with config from the IconLib archive).

There are of course more tricks around too (especially if you have more CPU and RAM), but those can get you started.

Example, my minimig...
