What was your first download from Aminet?
« on: October 30, 2006, 12:51:20 PM »
Initially I was supposed to reply to the "BEST AMIGA MOD" thread... but I sorta got a little nostalgic halfway through.

I'm just curious, can anyone remember the first file they've ever downloaded from Aminet for their beloved miggy, and how long ago it was?

My first was DeathJester's vomit.mod  :-D

Downloaded it using my brothers PC in 1997 (~10 years ago), transferred it to my A1200 using PC2AMIGA and an 8Metre (custom) null modem cable... I actually installed DB9 wallplates in each room just for transfers like that, since my brothers PC was pretty far away

I don't use the wallplates or PC2Amiga anymore, but I also dont want to remove them; they remind me of better days  :-(

...In case you've read this far, my A1200's videoDAC died in 1999 - I've still kept the motherboard till now though, guess I hoped someone would have spares; I was wrong, it seems.

I really can't remember what my first Aminet download could have been. I downloaded a lot of programs and mods back then, from numerous BBSes and Aminet. So I'll have to pass on this one I'm afraid :-D

I can't remember the very first thing I downloaded. But I do remember Aminet with very fond memories.

Back then we were on 14400 dialup. My dad allowed me 1/2 an hour of Internet use per week, on a Saturday morning. Back then they had the "unique page" which you bookmark and when you visit it, it shows you everything that has been uploaded since your last visit. Every week there were hundreds of new games, utilities, Workbench hacks..... At the time MODs and demos didn't interest me, but there were always lots of them too.

I would rush to look down the whole list and download everything that looked fun or useful, then begin the laborious process of transferring everything from my dad's PC to my Amiga on floppies. Every week there was something so exciting that it was always a treat :-)

Now when I look at Aminet I always have a touch of sadness, when I see how little is uploaded.

Does the Aminet CD given away on CU Amiga count?  Cause I copied a lot of that onto floppies, unplugged the A570 and plugged the A590 back in to install.

Those weren't the days...

From the actual, rinky-dink inter-ma-net, however, I'm pretty sure it was Miami onto a PC-HDD floppy and onto my A1200 when I borrowed a modem before getting a PCMCIA NIC.  (Can't remember if I had to split the file or not, I think I did and remember having to download a splitter for PC and Amiga).

I remember accessing Aminet for the first time many years back around 1998 I believe.  I think some of my first downloads were a few games, but for the main part I remember downloading the separate files for Miami.  Wow, I about died when we got the Amiga 1200 online. :) :-)

Hmm, quite hard to remember. I guess it was lha or Ncomm (I was still frequently using BBS at that time).
