USB CD drives and Poseidon
« on: January 21, 2006, 04:18:19 AM »
Hi,

I've been given a ZIP650 external USB CD-R/RW drive, so I thought it might be good to get it going with my A1200 and Subway USB.

However, Poseidon doesn't want to play ball! The drive is recognised and shown in the Trident GUI's "Devices" section but the drive repeatedly spins up for about nine seconds, then stops briefly, then starts again. During this time, the GUI is outputting massstorage.class warnings saying "Command (28000000 00000000 01000000) failed: 2" and "Ignoring automounting request: Blocksize 2048 bytes (CD or DVD?)".

The drive works under Windows XP, and the Amiga CD (Aminet 11) I've been using is recognised there.

Any ideas?

If it helps, I'm using the newly released Poseidon 3.2, as the 2.2 version I was previously using also didn't work with the ZipCD...

My A1200 has a 68060 with 32Mb RAM and Kickstart 3.1.

I guess I'll have to be patient and wait until the UK and US wake up!

Newly released Poseidon?

I'm a registered user and didn't know there's a new version around (nor was informed by the developer ;-(.

Where did you get it? Would be happy to upgrade (especially if it's a free upgrade).

Thanks.

It's unfortunately not a free upgrade... And it was announced in A.Org's news section.

There's also no way to register it at present, according to the Poseidon web site!

In its unregistered state, it'll only allow connection to one USB device (but is not time-limited).

That said, I still can't get it working with my ZipCD drive...

Hi,

Thanks for the info!

All I needed to do was to turn off the automounting feature for the drive, and all is now OK! Seems others have had the same problem...

@inthesand

IIRC registration is done through trident, not through the website anymore - and it is working, I got my keyfile within a few hours :-).
Mac Mini G4 (1.5GHz, 64MB VRam, 1GB Ram): MorphOS 3.6
Powerbook 5.8 (15", 1.67GHz, 128MB VRam, 1GB Ram): MorphOS 3.8.

Windows-free since 2011-2014 (Damn you Netflix!)

@Boot_WB: thanks for the info, found the registration option and have sent my payment via snailmail, as I'm not entirely sure that my A1200 is talking to the Internet properly!

Yesterday night I put the Poseidon Registration Website back online, took me some hours to fix the script.

About the CD drive, it will not be automounted (yet), and actually CD drives should be excluded automatically from automounting, as the automounting code (RDB and FAT) only copes with 512 byte physical blocks. Hence, using a mountlist and calling Mount after the drive had been connected is advised.

(BTW: I never had an USB CD or DVD drive here to test...)

Well, I'm happy to say the CD works fine once excluded from the automounting. Congrats on a great piece of software, well worth the upgrade/registration fee. Mine will be the snail mail one from New Zealand!

Cheers,
