A welcome surprise! The traditional end-of-year OS4 update has taken a few years off, but I’m glad to see it back, hopefully with more to come.
This looks to be mostly an under-the-hood update. Not much visible from the user perspective. From the release notes it looks like a lot of P96/CGX calls have been migrated over to graphics.library. That sounds like important work; RTG was always implemented as sort of a kludge, so merging RTG into the native graphics functions feels like a step toward de-kludgeifying it. Well done.
One thing to note for Enhancer Software users, now that there’s some development activity on the official OS4, there are some conflicts with AEON replacement components. In particular, AmiDVD and PartitionWizard are completely nonfunctional and will need to be updated. AEON’s Format froze on me. I haven’t decided yet which versions of other duplicated tools I want to keep, so make sure to do a backup before installing.
Not sure who the individual developers are who worked on this, but thanks!

@Matt_H
I agree with you on the A-EON replacement components.
I had AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition Update 1 + Enhancer Software v1.5
I used AmiDVD to backup my system partition to CD-R as I usually do when I do an upgrade.
Then I simply did an update overtop of my existing system, instead of starting out with a fresh install.
AmiDVD and PartitionWizard are toast. The update replaced A-EON clock with OS4 clock.
I haven't tried Format yet, but I think I will go back to OS4 Format if my existing one has been clobbered by this update (I can't remember if I installed the A-EON version of Format).
Otherwise, most of my programs seem to be working ok.

Fantastic news!
Thank you 4.1 team!!!

AmiDVD and PartitionWizard are toast.
Yup. But I was impressed that they failed cleanly with a requester rather than a Guru. :)
Hope to see more error trapping like this in the future.

WoW what an awesome Christmas surprise gift!!! ...2020 sucks less now eh :D

AEON Format is buggy as hell anyway, wouldn't let that anywhere near my disks. And I prefer the simple Clock to the overengineered AEON one. Which can always be renamed 'Clocker' LOL.
-
Does this fix the troublesome network stack on the Classic version where some of us (including myself) suffer from? Basically any network session that requires to download more than a few bites simply stalls after a while, making it totally impossible to update software over the air via both the Hyperion AOS and AEON update tools.
-
@spudje:
What hardware and network adapter are you using?
I don't have this problem. I'm using a CNet card in the CF slot on my A1200/BPPC/BVision, and I regularly download big files (e.g. a number of the release candidates for Update 2 durting alpha and beta testing) from my NAS with SMBFS over the LAN with no problems - other than the low speed of the 10Mb/s card compared to my other machines, of course.
Best regards,
Niels

I'm on a A4k with a PCI network card. I wasn't the only one. But I don't have time now to go look for the thread, on one of the Amiga forums. I'll hope to do that one of the coming days, but most likely after christmas.
I can't test either. Removed the CSPPC.

Update...
Originally, I simply applied the update directly to my existing system ...
AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition Update 1 + Enhancer Software v1.5
Clock and Format reverted back to OS4 versions plus changes to startup-sequence and kicklayout.
After some consideration, I decided to do a clean install to get rid of any zombies that might be lurking in my system.
Quick format of SYS: followed by install of FE followed by FE Update 1 followed by FE Update 2.
I had to update AmiSSL, NetInterface, startup-sequence, user-startup and my AmiDock config.
I will let the system soak for awhile before reintroducing any Enhancer Software.

I've had similar problems to spudje. It's been very frustrating having constant network timeouts :( I am forced to download things on another computer, copy to USB, and manually install.
Also, I just did a fresh os4.1FE install in WinUAE, updated to update 1 (no issues), rebooted, updated to update 2 (no issues during update), rebooted, and now it's in a constant reboot loop, I can't get into workbench at all. Has anyone else seen this?

We have now! I can't wait to do a fresh install! 8)

Doesn't motivate to even try the update :(
My network issues were discussed here (amongst others), mainly starting from this post https://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?mode=viewtopic&topic_id=41988&forum=14&start=20&viewmode=flat&order=0#832141
Has anyone tried the ZZ9000 networking functionality under AOS4.1FE? I know the graphics part can be made to work: https://www.dev74.com/en/blog-news/zz9000-works-fine-also-on-amiga-os4-1-fe-with-powerpc And I removed the mediator from my A4k.

@esc
Are you use GREX settings in winuae maybe? If so, as it was noted startup-sequence were changed and overwritten. But your original one backed up to the same plz (something like startup-sequence-upd2). So if you had in your old startup-sequence something about grex or whatever else, you may need to copy that to the new startup-sequence. For one user it was "C: BootLoader COMMANDLINE = "Grex NoRamPager NoDiskPager", so recheck to be sure.

It mysteriously works today after no further changes. I'm dumbfounded, but I'll take it :)

I'm not able to get the RapidRoad to work (with classic machine) with Poseidon as I'm getting this error.
9:09 PM| 0-poseidon.library: New hardware DEVS:USBHardware/rapidroadxs100usb.device/0 added (RapidRoadUSB Host Controller).
9:09 PM| 5-poseidon.library: GET_DESCRIPTOR (len 8) failed: packet overflow (7)
9:09 PM| 10-poseidon.library: GET_DESCRIPTOR (len 8) failed: packet overflow (7)
9:09 PM| 20-poseidon.library: Device enumeration failed, sorry.
9:09 PM| 20-poseidon.library: Root hub enumeration failed. Blame your hardware driver programmer.
Is anybody else using RapidRoad with CSPPC with OS4.1FE Update 2?

kas1e has revealed the following over at Amigaworld.net:
@All
I was told by Hyperion that I can share that news so:
Frederik (salas00) find out and fix the issue in the kernel which leads to all those disturbing issues of late, i.e. those as:
- freezing when using browsers
- mouse/stalls freezes
- networks stalls (especially on SAms)
- strange behaviors of simple mail when placing icons on wb
- issues with "priorities/tasks"
- hanging forbid on exit
- random lockups/crashes on running/exit apps
and so on.
That all will be available pretty soon in the hotfix update (i didn't know the exact date, but I assume few days or a week maximum). The hotfix will also contain some more fixes (not in the kernel area) in newlib, dox, text clip handling, etc, but the kernel one is one that is really important.
So for now those ones who have issues of such kind just switch back to the kernel from update1 and wait for a hotfix which should be out very soon.
Just we were a bit in a hurry when preparing the update (were in fear of something will happen again in the last minutes), so we were on a strict deadline and just didn't catch the small mistake which leads to such massive problems, but Frederik finds and fix so stay tuned.

Update...
I won't go into the boring details, but like many others, I had some issues with Update 2.
Eventually, I rolled back to the kernal from Update 1. That is the temporary fix until a hot fix is available.

Sorry completely disagree. In what way is it buggy. I have been using it for years without one single issue.
Even been beta testing OS3 version, without any issues.
-
Well for a start, it tries to format a different disk than the one you pick!!

@All
A hotfix is out! Grab while it hot!

great news but is it recommended that all users install this Hot Fix or only those having issues with Update 2?

Hi @my_pc_is_amiga, I see you answered this back on the Hyperion forums but I wanted to close the loop here, as I came across this thread first in my searches. I had this problem too, and the JIT blacklist solved it for me as well (using only a native mouse, as my Amiga 3K keyboard controller long ago gave up the ghost so without USB, a keyboard wasn't an option).

Update...
My system has been very stable since I installed the Hotfix for OS4.1 FE Update 2.
I am very happy with the results so far.
Aweb, IBrowse, NetSurf, Origyn, Odyssey, Final Writer 97, NotePad, Multiview, UnArc, WarpView, AmigaAMP, PPaint, TVPaint, and E-UAE are all working well.
I have less experience with MultiEdit and MultiViewer and Cinnamon Writer, but they all seem to be working ok so far.
Thanks to all involved.

Thanks for closing the loop here in this forum. I've had some issue in getting Diskdoctor to work with scsi.device (IDE hard drive). It gets stuck right away and I cannot use ctrl-c to kill it. Anybody else tried diskdoctor with a IDE hard drive?

So for claritys sake - are we talking OS4 on Classic or OS4 on new PPC systems here?
As a new OS4 and X5000 user (I know, shocking)...I was completely confused here, am I supposed to:
1. Install OSFE Pre-Release and then AEON Enhancer etc. or
2. Install OSFE Pre-Release, Update 1, Update 2 (and HOTFIX) and then look at Enhancer 1.5?
...this seems messy and then
3. If I choose to install Enhancer 1.5, presumably I then go ahead and upgrade to the newly released 2.1 ???
Right now I did #1 and system is OK but looks up occasionally when copying to RAM disk: - can be triggered easily by unarchiving, for example.
-

PPC. Well, in fact it also runs on a classic, if it has a CyberStormPPC or BlizzardPPC.
As a new OS4 and X5000 user (I know, shocking)...
Welcome! Pleased to see you :-)
I was completely confused here, am I supposed to:
1. Install OSFE Pre-Release and then AEON Enhancer etc.
No, probably not the best way by now.
or
2. Install OSFE Pre-Release, Update 1, Update 2 (and HOTFIX) and then look at Enhancer 1.5?
Yes, that's what I would do. Regarding the hotfix, it is included in the Update 2 package available now, so you don't have to install that separately.
Regarding Enhancer, if you want that, you might as well get version 2 (for an upgrade fee, I believe) and then upgrade it to 2.1 (for free, using Updater which is part of the Enhancer).
Be aware that Enhancer stupidly overwrites some OS commands and other modules with their own homegrown versions, so you might want to not just blindly install the whole thing, but select only the parts you really need.
Best regards,
Niels
