Computer & Power consumption
« on: February 26, 2003, 05:17:22 PM »
Hi
On next week "OIC" meeting, Iran and several countries plan to submit proposal for "Oil Embargo" against USA.
The price of oil may reach US$ 50 / barrel / more.

Organization of Islamic Conference

Except Venezuela, all OPEC (Oil Cartel) members are also members of OIC. Will Russia + UK increase the oil production rate?

Is there any way to cut power consumption of PC / AMIGA?

Is small 400 MHz PDA + solar panel / hand cranck power generator have better power efficiency than desktop PC / Amiga?

Of course there is - turn it off when you're not using it!

This might seem blindingly obvious to you and me, but it would surprise you how many people run multiple computers 24/7 with absolutely no need to.

I think something you might find more alarming is the amount of fossil fuels required in chip manufacture.  I don't have a URL handy to quote, I think I read it in some paper type thing once.  If you think about the acceleration of the PC hardware market, and the average life of PC hardware, that becomes extremely alarming...

Computers generally  are pretty low on the power consumption scale, there are far bigger fish to target first.

I probably read the same thing you did.  I remember the author saying that the mass ratio of the inputs versus the output was something like 90:1.  That's a hell of a lot of waste.

Solarpowered amiga that would be cool!!!
It´s not the computer that consumes most energy, it´s the fans :-)
Apple did it right the first time, bring back the Newton!
