Worth fixing damaged A600 1mb chip ram expansion?
« on: April 18, 2011, 06:45:33 PM »
The 1MB chip ram expansion (trapdoor) of my A600 is damaged and i want to know if its worth my hassle to fix it.

Basically, it does work because when i boot up into workbench it does show that the A600 has 2MB of chip ram but there are many crashes such as software errors or frozen screens.

This does not seem to affect games that are "NDOS"

I noticed there some damage to the connecters attached to the socket and also some traces are black but don't look damaged. See attached picture.

This damage was done by the RTC battery which has now been removed.

How should i go about fixing it? I am not the best at soldering.

First off, clean the surrounding area. Lots of opinions on how to do this, but the poor mans way would be to first use a high grit sandpaper and lightly sand the corrosion off. Metal should like nice and shiny, not dull or burnished. Be careful not to further ruin any traces of course. Then, using a mixture of baking soda and vinegar and a rag or toothbrush, clean the surrounding area and dry. Next, using a DMM, test for broken traces and continuity. Solder accordingly.

Mine looks like this: http://twitgoo.com/201gfl
I had the exact same problem as you, it displayed 2MB in WB but would randomly crash.

I pulled the card out and ordered an Amiga 1200 instead, well two actually =)

@SAVE2600 - Yeah I'll have a go cleaning it up and fixing it. Nothing to lose i guess.

@Damiga - Ouch that looks even worse than mine. Already have an A1200 but i would like my A600 to eventually run WHDLoad nicely. Plus its small :)

Yep, purchasing a working A1200 or two will fix a dead A600 everytime!
